BAFTA judge quits over “unforgivable” racial slur at awards show

A BAFTA judge quit after an audience member shouted a racial slur while “Sinners” costars Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo were presenting an award.

The incident happened at the British Academy Film Awards in London, England on Sunday, Feb. 22.

The Academy was heavily criticized in Europe and in the U.S. for not editing the racial slur from the final broadcast of the awards show that had a 2-hour delay.

According to the Daily Star, BAFTA judge Jonte Richardson announced he is resigning due to the academy’s “utterly unforgivable” handling of the situation.

Filmmaker Richardson was a juror on the organization’s emerging talent judging panel.

In a statement on LinkedIn, Richardson wrote:

“After considerable soul-searching, I feel compelled to withdraw from the Bafta emerging talent judging panel. The organization’s handling of the unfortunate Tourette’s N-Word incident last night at the awards was utterly unforgivable.”

He added, “I cannot and will not contribute my time, energy and expertise to an organization that has repeatedly failed to safeguard the dignity of its Black guests, members and the Black creative community.”

BAFTA has a “long history of systemic racism.”

Richardson continued: “When an organization like Bafta, with its own long history of systemic racism, refuses to acknowledge the harm inflicted on both the Black and disabled communities and offer an appropriate apology, remaining involved would be tantamount to condoning its behavior.”

John Davidson, who is diagnosed with Tourette syndrome, was the inspiration for a character in the movie “I Swear”. Davidson, who was in the audience, blurted out the racial slur, but he claims his utterance was involuntary.

Davidson also reportedly shouted “shut the f— up” and “f–k you” to two women at the event.

“I Swear” stars Robert Aramayo as a character diagnosed with Tourette syndrome.

The movie won a BAFTA award on Sunday.

Tourette syndrome, or Tourette’s, is a neurological disorder that causes involuntary verbal outbursts and tics (involuntary movements).

BAFTA host Alan Cumming apologized for Davidson’s outbursts.

“You may have noticed some strong language in the background. This can be part of how Tourette syndrome shows up for some people as the film explores that experience,” Cumming said. “Thanks for your understanding and helping create a respectful space for everyone.”

Cumming added: “If you have seen the film ‘I Swear,’ you will know that film is about the experience of a person with Tourette syndrome. Tourette syndrome is a disability, and the tics you’ve heard tonight are involuntary, which means the person who has Tourette’s syndrome has no control over their language. We apologize if you were offended.”

But critics said BAFTA should have edited the offensive language from the final broadcast. Others accused the Academy of setting up the Black actors to promote the movie.

Kenya Moore’s salon eviction drama is finally coming to an end. After months of unpaid rent, Kenya has been ordered to pay her landlord $87,000 in back rent and utilities.

The landlord, Northland Chamblee LLC, sued Kenya in October 2025 after she refused to pay up or leave. The reality TV star managed to delay the court proceedings by filing motion after motion.

The former “Real Housewives of Atlanta” star had accused the landlord of not reimbursing her for renovations she made to the salon.

Vlogger Michelle “ATLien” Brown obtained court documents that show a judge ordered Kenya to pay $43,988 this month (February) and another $43,988.67 by late March.

The judge also ordered Kenya’s company, Moore Vision Media, to pay around $5,500 a month in rent until she vacates the premises.

But friends say Kenya is broke and doesn’t have the money to pay the landlord.

Kenya, 55, shares 7-year-old daughter, Brooklyn, with businessman Marc Daly. They broke up in 2018.

The RHOA star opened the Kenya Moore Hair Spa in Atlanta in 2024.

During the grand opening, Kenya revealed posters showing Brit Eady allegedly performing oral sex.

Bravo Network fired Kenya, and Brit Eady filed a lawsuit against all parties involved.

In her lawsuit, Brit claimed the posters “falsely yet unmistakably implied” that it was her in the images. She is demanding $20 million in damages.

Brit Eady (right) claims Bravo “contributed to a hostile work environment” and sexually harassed her by subjecting her to “unwelcome, offensive, and sexualized behavior and comments.”

She is asking Bravo to remove the episode from all platforms and media.

According to Michelle Brown, the landlord advised the judge that Kenya still hasn’t paid the February installment. He wants her out of his property immediately so he can rent it out.

Michelle says Kenya missed the deadline to file an appeal and she can be evicted immediately.

The gold-winning USA women’s ice hockey team has declined President Trump’s invitation to attend tonight’s State of the Union Address in Washington, DC.

Both the men’s and women’s teams won gold at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan, Italy.

For the first time, both the U.S. men’s and women’s teams took home gold medals in the same Olympic Games.

The men’s team defeated Canada 2-1 in overtime to win their first gold medal in ice hockey in 46 years.

Each team has won three gold medals. The USA women’s team previously won gold medals in 2018 and 1998. The men’s ice hockey team previously won gold in 1980 and 1960.

Both men’s and women’s hockey teams were invited by the White House to attend President Trump’s SOTU address tonight. 20 of the 25 men’s hockey stars will be there tonight, but the women declined the invitation due to scheduling conflicts.

The women allegedly declined the invite because Trump called to congratulate the men’s team in Milan. But the president didn’t call the women after they beat Canada 2-1 in overtime.

Trump allegedly told the men’s team, “I must tell you, we’re going to have to bring the women’s team, you do know that.” He said if they didn’t bring the women’s team, “I do believe I probably would be impeached.”

FBI Director Kash Patel caught heat for celebrating with the men’s hockey team in the locker room in Italy. But he didn’t visit the women’s locker room after their victory.

Public Enemy rapper Flavor Flav invited the women to attend “a real celebration” after Trump dissed them.

“If the USA Women’s Hockey team wants a real celebration and invite … I’ll host them in Las Vegas. Do some nice dinners, shows, and good times. I’m sure I can get a hotel and airline to help me out here and celebrate these women for real for real,” Flav posted on X/Twitter.

Savannah said Tuesday that her mother “was taken in the dark of night from her bed.”

The “Today” show anchor said her family still believes in a miracle. “We also know that she may be lost, she may already be gone” and “is dancing in heaven,” “but we need to know where she is… We need her to come home.”

Savannah said information about the $1 million reward is available in the caption of her video.

She is also donating $500,000 to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children to help families like hers who are missing loved ones.

Savannah, who lives in Manhattan, has been in Tucson since her mother’s disappearance 24 days ago.

FBI Director Kash Patel released Nest doorbell camera video that shows a masked person approaching Nancy’s front door and tampering with her doorbell camera.

The suspect wore a ski mask, a windbreaker jacket, jeans and sneakers. He/she also wore a $10 backpack from Walmart and a gun holster similar to a type of holsters made in Mexico.

Investigators are working with Walmart security to trace sales of the backpack.

On Monday, the FBI said the same individual was seen outside Nancy’s house on a previous night before she was taken.

An image from the doorbell camera shows the masked suspect dressed in a different jacket and he/she is not wearing a backpack or a gun holster.

Authorities believe the suspect was scared off by the doorbell camera. The suspect returned to Nancy’s home on a different night.

Former Minnesota Vikings defensive back Ronyell Whitaker died on Sunday, according to his family. He was 46.

The family announced Whitaker’s death in a statement on the Minnesota Viking’s website on Monday.

No cause of death was released.

“While many knew him for his athletic accomplishments, those closest to him knew him best for his generous heart, unwavering loyalty and deep love for his family. He was a protector, a mentor and a source of strength and laughter to all who had the blessing of knowing him,” the statement read.

The family asked “for prayers, love and privacy as our family grieves this tremendous loss and celebrates the life of a man who meant so much to so many.”

Whitaker, a resident of Norfolk, Va., played football at Taylor High School and at Virginia Tech. He went undrafted and signed as a free agent with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2003.

Whitaker later signed with the Vikings in 2006 before joining the Detroit Lions. He finished his career with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League in 2008.

Whitaker’s death came one day after wide receiver Rondale Moore was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at age 25.

Moore (pictured) was “found deceased Saturday in his hometown of New Albany, Indiana.” His body was found in his garage. No foul play is suspected.

Moore was reportedly depressed after knee injuries derailed his promising NFL career.

The Vikings are still processing the news of Moore’s death. The team issued a statement.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Rondale Moore. While we are working to understand the facts, we have spoken with Rondale’s family to offer our condolences and the full support of the Minnesota Vikings,” the statement read. “We have also been in communication with our players, coaches, and staff, and will make counseling and emotional support resources available to anyone in need. Our thoughts are with Rondale’s family and friends during this devastating time.”

Atlanta Mayor says Gov. Gavin Newsom’s comment was a “moment of vulnerability”

Calls grow for Democratic California Governor Gavin Newsom to step down for telling a Black mayor “I’m like you. I can’t read.”

The incident happened on Sunday when Newsom visited Georgia to promote his new memoir and to campaign for former Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms who is running for Governor in 2026.

During a conversation with Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens at the Rialto Theater, Newsom gestured toward Dickens, who is Black, and said, “I’m not trying to impress you, I’m just trying to impress upon you, I’m like you. I’m not better than you. I’m a 960 SAT guy.”

Newsom continued: “And I’m not trying to offend anyone. I’m not trying to act all there if you got 940 … You’ve never seen me read a speech because I cannot read a speech.”

Following the public backlash on Monday, Newsom said he was referring to his “lifelong struggle with dyslexia” and he said the public criticism was “fake f–ing outrage.”

Mayor Dickens, also a Democrat, made excuses for Newsom. Dickens said the governor’s comments were “not an attack on anyone” but rather “a moment of vulnerability.”
Photo of Mayor Andre Dickens' statement

Newsom’s supporters said he was referring to the mostly white audience when he claimed his low SAT score was just like them.

However, white people averaged 1030 points on the SAT exam while Black people scored an average of 903 on the SATs.

The backlash continued on X/Twitter on Monday.

An X user uncovered old video of Newsom telling an author that he read his entire 260-page book in 1.5 hours.

Newsom is accused of lying about his dyslexia.

When a Fox News reporter asked the governor for documented proof of his dyslexia, a Newsom staffer told her to “f–k off.”

Tourette syndrome caused someone to yell racial slur at BAFTA

American actors Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo were involved in a viral moment at the British Academy Film Awards in London, England on Sunday, Feb. 22.

An audience member’s racial outburst prompted an apology from The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). The broadcaster claims an audience member’s racial outburst and profanity were symptoms of Tourette syndrome.

The audience member’s outbursts drew criticisms from Americans across the pond. Viewers criticized the BBC for leaving the racial slur in the television broadcast, which aired on a 2-hour delay.

Variety also reported that someone yelled “shut the f— up” and “f–k you” at the event.

“Some viewers may have heard strong and offensive language during the BAFTA Film Awards 2026,” a BBC spokesperson told NBC News. “This arose from involuntary verbal tics associated with Tourette syndrome, and was not intentional. We apologize for any offense caused by the language heard.”

BAFTA host Alan Cumming also apologized for the outbursts.

“You may have noticed some strong language in the background. This can be part of how Tourette syndrome shows up for some people as the film explores that experience,” Cumming said. “Thanks for your understanding and helping create a respectful space for everyone.”

Cumming claimed Tourette’s causes sufferers to use profanity:

“If you have seen the film ‘I Swear,’ you will know that film is about the experience of a person with Tourette syndrome,” he said. “Tourette syndrome is a disability, and the tics you’ve heard tonight are involuntary, which means the person who has Tourette’s syndrome has no control over their language. We apologize if you were offended.”

Tourette syndrome, or Tourette’s, is a neurological disorder that causes involuntary verbal outbursts and tics (involuntary movements).

The BAFTA-nominated movie “I Swear” stars Robert Aramayo as a person who is diagnosed with Tourette syndrome.

John Davidson, who is diagnosed with Tourette’s, was the inspiration for the movie’s character. Davidson was in the audience, but NBC News was unable to confirm that Davidson was behind the racial slur or the profanity.

Famous people with Tourette’s include former NBA player Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf, actor Dan Aykroyd, singer Billie Eilish, and soccer star David Beckham.
