Fan Mail: Rocko not claiming Monica?

Readers are always invited to email me, but sometimes I get the strangest requests. Yesterday, a reader sent me an email asking me to explain a statement made by Rocko Da Don during his recent appearance on BET’s 106 & Park. The email contained a transcript of the interview.

The reader challenged me to post the contents of the email on my site. She threatened to send the same email to “another popular blog that gives readers an opinion,” if I didn’t.

The last time I checked, my readers were free to express their opinions on any subject.

The reader went on to assume that Rocko, who shares a home with Monica, was not “claiming” her on the show based on his response to a question he was asked. By the way, Rocko’s fiancee Monica was also a guest on the show that day.

The question posed to Rocko was: “What exactly is your relationship with Monica?” Rocko’s response was, “I mean, shout outs to Monica. That’s my people. We got a cool situation. We got kids, the whole nine of whatever. So shout to Monica.”

Anyone who knows Rocko knows how he feels about Monica and his kids. Rocko is a thug. Thugs don’t normally open up to total strangers. They are very reserved, methodical and control-oriented. They keep their emotions in check.

All that matters is that Rocko and Monica love each other, they support each other’s careers, and take care of their kids. Everything else is irrelevant.

i know monica your girl and all and it would be foul of you to be honest in your opinion sandra, but this ish is NOT hot in 2008. having 2 kids for a dude, who you’ve been with for a minute and you still claiming you his “fiancee”? naw kid. we as women need to step our game up. thug or not he shouldnt be too cool to profess his love and commitment to her. i love thugs,my husband is a true “g” and he dont have a problem with telling any nig who ask that im his woman, his wife, the mother of his child. monica is a beautiful chick and ol’ rocko needs to be happy he’s with her. i mean if she like it, i love it but she should want more than just that down ass baby momma, perpetual fiancee status. i know the are a “industry” couple but i cant understand why many of them choose to deny each other openly. if its true love then its nothing to be ashamed of. that goes for anybody. i feel like we as black females are happy to have any title to hold on no matter what it is so long as it keeps us relevent.

I mean, I kinda understand where he’s coming from with his response. He probably just didn’t want to go into further details about his relations with Monica. People aready know their dating and have kids so it’s no secret. But he could at least said, “YEAH, THAT’S MY GIRL, SHOUT OUTS TO MONICA.” And kept it at that.

between him and TI’s guns, you make me wonder sometimes. however, i think you like to inject a little controversy into your posts so i am going to believe that you are as disappointed in his response as i am.

damn, i’m on the fence w/ this one…sandra, on one hand i know what u mean…i know a lot of guys/thugs who would’ve done the same thing…but on the other hand you have a guy/thug like TI who claims his girl w/ no problem…i know guys/thugs like that as well…the bottom line is they do what works for them…i doubt she took offense or even brought this up when they talked or whatever…it’s clear Monica is his women and if a chick decides to go down that route, she’s walking in knowing she’s a jump-off…period, point blank…he doesn’t have to prove anything to anyone but her…i’m sure they discuss this type of stuff as well…

I am not doubting you but are you sure Monica was on 106 that day? Only ones I saw were Rocko, JD, and Flo Rida.. Now I very well may be wrong because I am known for taking naps on 106 since Aj and Free left.. But I don’t remember seeing Monica on there…

And as far as him saying that she is his peoples and they have a cool situation personally it sounds like “Yeah we Fkcu every now and then, we got kids together, she does her thing on the side and I do my thing.. Shout out to Monica” I’m just sayin…. LOL LOL

People kill me wanting everybody to express their feeling the way they do. Monica and Rocko are doing Monica and Rocko. Why does the status of THEIR relationship matter to so many people? Y’all are jumping on this man for expressing himself the way that he felt appropriate, but how different do you think Monica’s response would have been? Bottom line they are happy loving each other the way that they want to love each other. Everybody doesn’t dream of having a husband. My mother is damn near 60 and will tell anybody that she is too young to get married. I wish people would stop trying to force their ideas of happiness on everybody!!

anyhoo, i don’t see the big deal as to why he couldn’t have said that monica was his woman. he didn’t have to take it any further than that. but to each it’s own. if they are happy, that’s all that matters i guess.

areuforreal, you said not everyone dreams of having a husband. you’re right but does everyone dream of being a baby momma? i guess they do then. there isnt anything wrong with being married and wanting to be respected. there is something wrong with people who thing marriage isnt neccessary. if a chick is good enough to lay with then she should be godo enough to be a wife. see without a true commitment a man can feel free to come and go as he please. and the minute a chick’s feelings get hurt he has the “you aint my wife” fact to fall back on.

the thugism thing is and has never been cool. the fact of the matter is if they are together and that’s his fiance why wouldn’t you be excited about it? i think the “thugs don’t open up to strangers” is a sad excuse to me.

the shout out is more of a she’s cool. that’s my baby mama. i don’t know. seems like she’s going through what most women go through with these men these days. we don’t make them commit, they know the ratio is like 10 to 1 so they can do whatever they want. too many pieces of candy to choose from all different shapes sizes and colors. it’s just my opinion it doesn’t count for sh*t.

This is sad. Whats worse about his comment about Monica being his “people” is that this is the way alot of other BLACK men feel about the woman who brings their kids into the world. To excuse this behavior for being a “thug” is not acceptable. The true reason for not claiming the woman you are with is because you are really an “open agent” and dating whoever swings it your way. I doubt Rocko is faithful but Monica is a grown woman and obviously loves and stands by her man. Its just sad that many children (including Monica’s) grow up with their parents never making a real commitment to eachother. It begins a cycle of young men who think it is OKAY to have children and not get married. True, unplanned pregnancies happen but God meant for children to be born in a marriage. I cant argue what God says just because of the times we are living in. T.I is wrong in my book too. Yes, he claims Tiny but the bottom line is they have had 3 children (including the one who passed) and her last name STILL isn’t Harris!

Marriage that you all are speaking of is a civil union.
When the bible refers to man and wife do you think it means a ceremony, cake and filing papers at city hall? It means a couple who join in his eyes. In biblical days a man would just show up at his intended house and ask her parents if he could take her as his wife.If he had something of value to offer he did. If they family accepted, sometimes they had a ceremony, sometimes she simply went to live with him.
God does not require legal papers.

That statement is what my brother would have answered had someone asked him about his baby’s mother and they aren’t even together, as well as I’m sure a lot of co-parents that aren’t together but work together for their children’s sake.

Awww hell nawll. He could have answered the point blank question, “What exactly is your relationship with Monica?” with something along the lines as, “she’s supports me, she’s the mother of my children and my fiance/wifey/girl but, we like to keep our relationship private; Anyway my new album is now in stores”……

No he doesn’t have to prove to the world how much he loves her by shouting her name across roof tops, always being with her, tattooing her name across his neck, bringing her up in every interview etc… But damn she has been there since day one of your career, bore your children, was enough woman for you to propose to; you could have acknowledged her better than a statement that could easily translate into, “we have children together and we have a good relationship”. Hell I’m sure he could apply that statement to his first son’s mother. It’s not as if they were asking, “Who pays the bills? Are you guys monogamous? Do you live together? Have you set a wedding date yet”? etc…

I’m sure those alledged jump offs at that other site that claimed they were messing with him and that Monica knew the deal about their relationship (friends and co-parents) are having a field day with this shyt. As good as I look I’ll be damned if I’d be claiming a man as my fiance and he was claiming me as his peeps and I dated a thug thug who wasn’t even on that type of shyt. That’s just me personally but, if this works for them then hey, do them………

AreUForReal my mother’s husband died and she feels the same way as yours but I personally think Monica feels different, she excepted his proposal and claims him as a fiance.(sp)

I love Monica as an artist she’s no doubt one of the best, but she’s always had poor judgement when it comes to men…It seems like every man she hooks up with is hood…I never understand what beautiful, talented, smart women see in thugs and gangsters and why would you waste your self worth on a man who truly has nothing to offer you except babies…The real question shouldn’t be directed toward Rocko but more toward Monica because a thug is going to be a thug regardless and you can’t expect anything more…And trust me Rocko and Monica will never marry in the next 3 years or so that relationship will be over and she’ll another baby mama with 2 kids.

I remember some years back when TBOZ of TLC kept talking about how much she wanted a thug and she loves thugs then she got hooked up with and later married and had a baby by rapper Mac 10 who whipped her a**, cheated on her repeatedly and threatened to kill her now she looks stupid.

I’m not saying that’s the kind of relationship that Monica and Rocko has, but women have to know up front when they get involved with thugs, gangsters, and bad boys that a certain kind of relationship comes with it.

Baby please, birthing that fools children and standing behind him makes her more than ‘his’ people. His people sign checks, book hotels, book his coast to coast tour, CD signings, field the large trucks of fan mail he gets every day – THOSE are your people. That is a piss poor way to describe her. The “cool situation” leads me to further believe that she has on blinders behind this rap sensation. Thug? How about sorry? Have you ever looked at someone and just ‘felt like they are settling for less than they truly deserve’? I feel pretty strongly about the getting married thing but she’s the one who’ll be crying and singing sad songs in a few years (after she has the next baby). Then again, why should Rocko marry her? He’s got everything he needs – a cool situation, she gets along well with the other son’s mom, she’s behind him 100%-why should she be entitiled to vows and a committment?

Obviously their ‘cool situation’ works for them. We all make choices based on what we feel is right for us, or at least we should. She looks happy to me, she doesn’t look miserable or forced. If any of you have been in and or around the industry, you understand that the real stuff (life), happens when the cameras stop rolling. Maybe he answered that way because he/they don’t want to alienate his female fans. I don’t think this chic is stupid or settling for less, just because she chooses to have an unconventional relationship. Love is wrapped in all kind of packages, not just the ones we read about in fairytales.

coco, Your assuming that it’s always the man who doesn’t want to commit or get married. In the situation with my mother. She was engaged to my father for all of 24 hours, when she called him back and said that she wasn’t ready and to come get his ring. And, yes this was after they had been together for almost 5 years and I was about 1 year old.

My point is marriage is an individual choice. It’s not always a matter of who is good enough for who. It’s a matter of what makes you comfortable and the understanding that you have with the special person in your life.

One of the reasons why relationships fail is because people are always so concerned about what people on the outside have to say about what they are doing together. Does Monica and Rocko having children without being married affect your household? Hell No!!!

*******Am I pressed to get married? No. Would I like to be married? Maybe, one day. Do I want to have children? Some day. Is the plan to be somebody’s “baby mama”? Hell no, but shit happens. when you give them everything there is no need to settle down. i was in the same situtation. was with my daughter’s father for 10+ yrs helped raise his other child…got the house with the picket fence, the cars had a baby…and at the end of the day. when it was time to plan a wedding he wasn’t ready as he says. but, still wanted to be in a relationship and have all the benefits of having me there.

so, as a women i had to decide if this is really what i wanted. if monica is happy then so be it! that’s her choice. i for one wasn’t happy with just being with him and living a married life and not having a commitment. yeah, its just a piece of paper. but, for legal purposes as far as is something happened to him where would i be?

Wow. Just wow. Sandra your explanation is totally off. The fact is this nigra is inarticulate. I’ve seen it a million times when these rappers do interviews. It’s embarrassing. It’s a very public reminder that many of our underpriviledged people never learn to speak regular english. His comment on TRL sound very dissmissive of Monica and makes me feel sad for her once again when I was trying to stop thinking so negatively about her.

Now that’s a good question. If he didn’t have ties to her would he still get attention? Maybe that’s why he breezed over the topic the way he did. trying to keep the focus on him. It does seem like his relationship is getting more shine than his album.

this says it all right here. my dad finally made his “fiancee” of 15 years legit last year. we (his kids) kinda laughed a few years ago because she bought her own d*mn ring one christmas and started calling herself his fiancee (she kept wearing it for years too) but he never even proposed. he was comfortable.

however, he had to have a heart valve replaced recently. the hospital would not give her the time of day; legally, they couldn’t. she had put herself down as his WIFE and the hospital scratched it out right in front of her when i arrived. they would only talk business with me as the next of kin.

i felt bad for her because she does all the work but that moment really brought it home to her. i told her that i would respect her wishes if he were to die because of the dedication she had shown him over the years. they even had a cemetery plot together! however, i still legally held all the cards and i don’t think she realized it until then.

finally, he decided to take the plunge one day and i told him i was proud of him and she deserved it. it’s all legit now but they are both older with adult kids. marriage has its benefits.

Monica is ghetto too and that is probably the understanding that they have with each other.. If you listent to Rocko’s “Do Me” song, he mentions a few things about the type of women he likes. Monica knew that dude was the way he is when she first met him. She might have been his jumpoff to begin with then they had a baby. Monica knows her position with him pretty much like Keyshia and Jeezy’s relationship. Doesn’t make sense to us but makes sense to them.

It entertains me when people blog about other people blogging (all the while reading the posts–sensational). Does it ever occur to anyone that the opinions just very well may have come from someone who has been down that road, learned a lesson, and lived to tell the story? So, just because you don’t agree with the opinion-don’t be so quick to judge it/dismiss it as hating. everyone on here is taking one side or the other on this issue. what bothers me is not just monica and rocko, its any woman who thinks that its okay to settle for the baby momma role. you can be that down chick and have his babies but at the end of the day if something happens to this man you and your kids end up a@sed out because he didnt respect you enough to make it official. im speaking from what i know. i have seen this happen time and time again. women should want more. and as i said before it is 2008 and thats NOT hot just be a BM(baby’s momma). all of people here feel like a person can do what they want to do and they’re right, they can but i wish we could just try and start striving for more. there is nothing weak about wanting to raise your family in a two parent home and be in a loving relationship. me and my dude keep it gutter but we married and raising our kids the right way. and also as i said before, anybody ask him and he isnt ashamed to answer. you wont get some round about answer about me being his “people” or some crap like that

As far as the shout out Rocko threw at Monica, my opinion allows me to say I thought it was a tad bit disrepectful, then again woman & men are so different cause I remember when Chili was dating Usher & she was on there giggling & smiling all over herself about him, but when he came out it was something totally different!! Us woman have always been more emotional & tend to share our feeling more, well I won’t say all woman!! but I know I do!!
Someone mentioned something about celebs not wanting to claim who they are really with, that could be true for 2 reasons 1.they don’t want everyone in there business, 2. they are truly not a couple they could be just friends but if Monica is suppose to be his fiance’ then he could have showed her more love than that!! all that jazz about being a thug is crazy cause when it’s all said & done they have feelings & needs just like everyone else…ask my husband (wink)!!!

Ok I am a long time reader but first time poster. I am a big fan of Monica and I can understand where she and Rocko are coming from. Please do not think just because you are married your husband is not out sticking it to whomever he pleases. I made that mistake. I was married before I had a child and thought my husband thought the world of me until I got a call from his jumpoff when my son was 2 weeks old. That piece of paper means nothing if both parties are not committed. Please believe if your man is a real man he will have life insurance and you and your child will be taken care off. If you take care of legalities as far as legitimizing your child you will get social security if the “man” has a job. We all need to stop playing adult games as kids and none of this will be a problem.

Wow..Monica and Rocko’s relationship is always sure to bring a lot of headted debate and convo on this board. Whatever the situation, I agree with those who say “let the two of them do them”…they are in their relationship together, not us. As long as long as they “like” what their situation is, we have to “love” it. Who are we to judge or make opinions about what’s going on in their household?

Lastly, in regards to Monica and her past relationships, way of life, etc..I think this interview she did on 20/20 a few years back will be the answer to all of this.

Ok thanx to ATLien for the video behind all the drama, now I may not like Rocko all that much as an artist but the way they made it seem like he just dissed Monica, not even the case!! Rocsi asked him does Monica give him advice as far as his music & thats when he shouted her out, after saying they did a song together, wow see how quick we are to judge myself included, but like I said no one knows there situation for real so after seeing that I think it’s safe to say he answered the question the way he should have!!

OMG… Sandra you’ve started a movement…LOL. Sandra i admire that you are always willing to defend Monica and any attacks on her, her family or her character. However, i will request that you maintain the same standing with all other baby-mamas out there – just be consistent in your opinion.

Am of the standing that these two (Rocko and MOnica) do not need to justify their relationship to anyone..doesn’t matter whether they’re in the spotlight or not. The minute you start explaining things, then you’ll be doing that for as long as you live… You can’t please everyone, but yourself. And what we should be asking is whether she’s happy with the way things are..people here seem to be assuming that she isn’t – based on the fact that she accepted his ring. But in this day and age – believe it or not – most women do not want to get married (more than men). She just may be one of them. I think what makes that hard to believe is the kind of woman Monica seems to be, or has portrayed herself as to the public. And that’s bringing the issue of ‘how can we respect her, if this is how she lives her life..’. I feel sorry for Monica, am sure she’s a nice person and doesn’t appreciate all this attention on her personal life. Anyway, i don’t think Rocko’s comments helped at all…they only fuelled the fire. Like everyone else, i also agree that he could have just acknowledged her and then closed the questions on that topic, rather than say something that dismisses her and their relationship all together. Hey-ho, Monica my prayers are with you. Don’t let the public determine how you live your life, you do what’s best for you and your children. That’s all that counts! That’s my 2 cents..LOL
