What’s the big damn deal?

Lil’ Wayne sold almost a million copies of that dreadful CD, the name of which escapes me right now. So what? A local DJ remembers when CDs used to ship one million units to stores. Now we’re making a big deal because a junkie manages to sell close to a million CDs.

The record label probably bought 300,000 of those units to give away or hide in warehouses. Even label execs are at a loss to explain why people are celebrating a feat that was de rigueur for the industry just a few years ago.

“There’s no logical answer,” says Universal Motown President Sylvia Rhone on why people are tripping so hard on Wayne’s sales.

Sandra, u must really hate wayne. Anyway, I am loving the cd and imo it was a worthy effort. I mean cut the young brotha some slack. not all are perfect and he is young. we all live and learn and shit if i were his age with that ton of money lord knows what i would be doing. CDs don’t sell anymore. Period. This man sold a million in one week, and its not some classic piece of material. Thats the point. With his album being leaked a week before its release, gas prices high as hell, houses in foreclosure (you get my point) he still managed to get 1 million people to spend 9.99 each, on his music. You damn right, people are tripping…He did what no one else has done in a looong time!

Thanks for the story on Wayne’s sales. This is what we should have been talking about from get go. I admit that I am not crazy about the CD, but I am not a huge rap fan. What I had heard from Wayne was enough to get me to buy it. Still there are a few songs on the CD that I really love. That’s a lot for me when it comes to non-Cali rappers.

Hmmmmm…at this time the economy is bad and the drug head sales 1 million copies?LOL, hmmm, more money in my pocket.Ok so a cd is about what $12( until like in a couple weeks it jump up to $20), that’s like maybe 2-3 gallons I can put in my car, lol.But if you referring to units, it doesn’t actually mean he sold 1 million copies.When people say units, that means that there still albums in stores that haven’t been sold, but shipped out, if that made sense.

Thank you, MissR2008. This is 2008, not a couple years ago, Sandra. People do not sell 1 million records in a week anymore. These days (itunes, downloading music, leaked albums, etc.), an artist can make number one selling 150K records. 1 million in a week hasn’t happened in three years time, so it is an accomplishment in this day and age (whether you like the music or not)

1 million + in a week is on some old Backstreet Boys and N’Sync type of sales. lol.

The big deal is that no one is doing these types of sales anymore because of technology and theft. I’m sure you know that though Sandra. If an artist these days sales 400k in the first week, they are happy. Regardless of what Wayne does in his extracurricular activities, he is talented and he has set the bar. Rhianna may have a habit or sexual fetish we may not be aware of until JayZ gets made and decides to speak on it. Artists are people, period.
