Sandra, thanks for including that clip from Tavis Smiley’s show on your site. I hadn’t seen that. Unlike 99% of your readers, I agree with everything that they said. And, maybe I missed it last night, but, in the movie they showed of Barack’s life before he spoke, I don’t remember seeing any pictures of his Kenyan family, even though I’ve seen pictures of them all over the Internet. He seems to take pride in the fact that he’s interracial, but yet only wants to highlight the white side of the family, while pretty much denying anything about him that is black or African.

People are saying Barack is going to be the president of all America, so he shouldn’t address black issues. But, for as long as I can remember, white Democrats running for president have been asked to tell what they are going to do for the black community. How many times did I hear this year people asking what have Hillary and Bill Clinton done for the black community to “deserve the black vote”, or what have Republicans done for blacks?

Before McCain spoke before the Urban League, the director of the UL said he would ask McCain what he was going to do for the black community. Why is it, if you’re a white candidate, you’re expected to kiss up to the black community, but if you’re a black candidate, you can just ignore our issues and pretend we don’t exist?

Oh, yeah, it’s because Obama has the black vote in his pocket. Because, we saw how he pandered to the Latino community to get their vote. Once again, blacks getting taken advantage of by the Democratic party. Things will not change if Barack gets elected; he’ll continue to pretend we don’t exist, except to perform for him.

And, Michelle IS the brains in that family. Anyway, keep up the good work!

His BLACK father left him when he was a baby. It was his white family that really took care of him and that was the side of the family that he connected with. It has nothing to do with catering to any community. He catered to the black community when he served as an activist for the BLACK people. Stop making something out of nothing. As far as I am concerned he didn’t have to connect with his African family. He chose to do that because he wanted to connection. What did they do for him in relation to what his mother’s family did? You guys took the words right out of my mouth. I do the same thing with my family. Although, I am not bi-racial, my mother’s family was who I was raised with and have memories of. When I became a teenager, I reached out to my father’s family and built relationships but those relationships will never compare to the relationships to my family on my mother’s side. I totally understand and identify with Obama in that respect. Furthermore, Obama mentions his Kenyan father in damn every speech that I have heard him give. His father left him at 3, mine left at 10 and I give him no props! If I was running for school board president I wouldn’t mention not one member of my father’s family including him.

Also, Obama is never asked what he’s going to do for Black people because he has always done things for Black people pre and post his political career. White politicians r always asked that question because 99% of the time, they had been in politics for years and have done nothing for he Black community but no sooner than they begin campaigning they find they way to the Black churches begging for votes.

Obama can not make any decision totally by his self so once america decides or if he gets into the office it is then left up to us to put the right people in the Senate and the House of Representative from your state!!! Don’t just stop with the president!!! As much as we want to know what the president is going to do for us we should be as eager to know what or Senators and House Representatives will do for us to get new bills passed and what will they do to help the black community. I totally agree with Tight 29 his real father ran away another man stepped up to the plate. His mother’s family is the one that helped put him through school besides all the student loans he stated he got.

I pretty much agree with everyone else who has commented. I have seen Obama with his family in Africa, but he may not be as close to them. I don’t fault them b/c I don’t know their situation and they did not father him. I don’t fault anyone other than his father for the possible lack of relationship. Still, he has visited with him but he knows his mother’s side b/c his mother and her parents raised him.

I’m not close to my father’s side of the family(though my dad is my best friend). But they live in another state and I don’t travel there often. When I do visit that state, I’m more apt to visit my mother’s family b/c they have always taken the initiative to maintain contact w/ me via phone, visits, and letters.

This is another attempt by US to assasinate our own people because “our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.” Barack doesn’t deny that he is black but why dwell on it? It is obvious. When he deals with black issues like the black family and personal responsibility, we (Jesse Jackson)get pissed and call him uppity. When he doesn’t say anything, he is ignoring us. GROW THE HELL UP AND STOP LOOKING FOR SOMEONE TO SAVE YOU. Barack is running for President of the US and not President of the NAACP. They white people are wondering why we don’t see his white family and black people are wondering why we don’t see his black family (that he never saw either). Grow up.

Sidebar: According to the US census, there are 281 million people in the US. 36.4 million of the are black. 14.6 million black people voted in 2004 which only represented 13% of the total votes. If that is the case and since then we have moved from #2 in population to #3 then I think Obama is doing exactly what he needs to do and PANDERING is what John McCain is doing in appointing a woman when he has never voted in favor of women’s rights, equalization or protection in 20+ years in the Senate while calling his wife a “cunt” among other things in public.

In any black family, the WOMAN is the backbone that keeps it together. Martin had Coretta, Malcolm had Betty, Will Smith has Jada and Bill Cosby has Camilla. Have you hear Alicia Keys song, “Unbreakable.” If not please find it and listen. Woman have always keep the family strong and allowed the men to been men in public but took care of them and their pride in private. Black Women has been the one helping the man figure his next move and being his cheerleader so he knows he is not alone. So STOP giving me the bulls&&t stating that Michelle is running the show. Michelle is the Executive Producer along with Barack. They are showing how a real Black family is suppose to be. They are making decision based on bother of their opinion. I was watching the Tavis Smiley show after Obamas speech and it was two black activist on there just downing the brother all because he didnt address Martin Luther King on this particular day of the speech because it was the anniversary of the I HAVE A DREAM speech. My thing is, this man is trying to win PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES! He has to grasp ALL races. We have never known a black man to make it as far as Barack has and yet we’re still not happy all because we want him to single us (black people) out. I think Barack is playing it smart because the white folks is just waiting on him to play the race card. But, instead his own people are playing it for him. Wait til the man get in office first. It;s bad enough that he’s getting pressured from the whites, women, republicans, independents. Why we have to add on to the stress. If he had every black vote in america (only) do you think the brother will win? That’s what happen to Jessie Jackson. Instead of playing his cards right until he got in the white house, he was to busy trying to prove to us that he wasnt a sell-out. Obama is playing it smart. I aint mad at him. I totally agree with most of the commenters…my father was in and out of my life until I was about 8 and then went out totally. I do not have ONE picture with anyone in his family or him so if I were running for president today, I could not identify with my father’s family. I don’t know his siblings…couldn’t tell you my grandmother’s name, nothing. So don’t be hard on the man for not mentioning people that he might barely know and don’t wrong him for putting the people that did right by him (white or not) in his clip.

There’s this thing where people say “give credit where it is due.” He going to give credit where it’s due and if his father wasn’t there, then his father didn’t have much of an impact on his life rather to be better than his father.I guess people think that some men (mostly black men) can’t strive for anything better.Obama is a man that happens to be bi-racial at first hand though.His skin tone should not really matter, his intelligence should really matter the most.If people start connected the dots (and I mean do read his recent book) then you see the kind of man he is.

i agree with all said. his father not being there could have pushed this man in the other direction against the black community. it could have really messed him up if he did not have a strong WHITE family who loved him enough to take him in and raise him. has anybody sat back and thought how hard it probably was for his white grandparents to accept him enough to raise him? they were white people from the midwest. and they still taught him to embrace the other side of his racial identity. i have a bi-racial homie and her white side wants nothing to do with her or her other bi-racial sibling AT ALL. they send the white sibling gifts at x-mas and birthday. her and her brother gets na-than. this in reality could have happened to obama but it did not.

his mom was a strong woman and for that it sounds like he is grateful. he is also grateful to his father to some extent or he would not have named his book “dreams from my father.” and i HAVE seen pics of him with the kenyans before. the kenyan grandmother is named sarah i think.

I agree with the very first comment posted. Also, if he didn’t want to connect or identify with the black community he wouldn’t have married a black woman knowing he would have black children. If you read his first book, you would have known that he dated a white woman who was really into him, but he could not fully give himself to her. She asked him, “is it because I’m not black?” and he said, “yes”. Therefore, he connects with the black community. I did not grow up with my father either. If I was in his position, I wouldn’t show my paternal family either because although I knew them, they did not have a direct affect on my life and the woman that I have become. Folks are making something out of nothing. The Senator has the anointing of God on his life. Some will know what I mean and the other’s will not understand what I am talking about.

His white mama raised him and his black a** daddy walked out on him. I am sure all of the fathers side of the family now is tyring to reach out to him, just like the athletes who fathers walk out on them but time they sign a big contract they try to come back into their lives.

It baffles me that we gladly supported OJ, when we knew damn well he killed his wife! Michael Jackson, who I would not let my children near! TI, a career criminal and all of our baby daddies,and sons who never grow up. I have an aunt who throws big ass parties for her sons whenever they come home from serving jail sentences. But when my sister and I graduated college, with multiple degrees, we got nothing from a woman who my mother adored. My mom died before witnessing all of her kids achievments and no one in her family cares. Obama should have the black vote in the bag. Sandra obviously didnt watch his speech or didnt pay attention. He touched base on dead beat dads, poverty, and mentioned how our government watched one of our most important cities drown. Secondly, I put this paragraph in quotations because I find it funny blacks are always looking to politicians to do everything for them. Yes, there are issues in every community that requires change at the legislative level, but what about issues that can be tackled at a community level. How ’bout banning together to get these drug dealing heathens up outta our communities, how ’bout protesting to get these liquor stores outta our neighborhoods and lobbying to get more libraries put up in our communities, how bout mentoring our young folk to seek higher education so they understand that rap music is not the only vehicle outta the hood. i see what the writer of the email was coming from but here is the thing she may fail to realize…
barack’s dad left him at a very young age so he didn’t really get a chance to know him or that side of the family. and i’m not sure that his fathers family even reached out to barack when he was living with his mom or white grandparents.

also YES whites needs to speak for the blacks because they normally will not do that since they don’t have a true part of us.

barack is speaking for the blacks just by running for office and having a black family (wife and children) in the white house. hello! for him to focus on blacks hard core would be as weird as if the white candidates focused on whites. how would that look? we may even loose votes on that note. don’t worry, we will get the help we need from barack. he will get to that but remember there is a strategy dear. blacks will get direction. because before barack there was God. and barack can’t be expected to change the world if we don’t get guidance from God or even help ourselves…

p.s. i am tired of people treating blacks like we are cripples or need special attention! look yes blacks were opressed and at times still discriminated against but we are not the only ones and we can come up just like any body else so lets not put our own race down like we always need hand holding. some of the problems in our own community is at fault of our own due to: hate, crime, and laziness. it’s sad. i’m not saying ignore our race but lets also help and empower ourselves and know we can do just as good as any other race without handouts.

He does not have to run around saying i’m black, i’m black to be considered a man to vote for or a man who cares about the black community. i think barack is focused on change and help for everyone overall. that will help all races. we are all in need. and also yes how about not being so critical of barack but looking to other leaders and ourselves in the community and how they and we can help the black race. it takes a whole village…remember that!

I just have one question and I will leave this Obama thing alone. Why in the hell did McCain pick a woman VP as his running mate who has more issues than needs to. I was alredy second guessing when they said she has 5 kids with the oldest being 17 and the youngest 10 months. Now I am a mother too but how are you gonna help run the US and be a mother too? Yes I have heard of Super Woman but in the world that we live in that is not gonna work. I figured McCain picked her to get the women majority vote but now I am really starting to think that McCain is pro OBAMA on the low. Now she just announced that her 17 yr old is pregnant and there is a chance that the child she was holding when McCain announced her as his running mate may have been her 17 year old’s first child but that has not been confirmed as of yet. All I am saying is McCain may wanna re-think his choices. If he is making bad decisions pre election just think what will happen post election….? Hmm something to think about.

In a bid to criminalize a fashion style popularized by urban youth and hip-hop fans, Riviera Beach voters approved the new ordinance earlier this year. While first offenders like Smith only face a monetary hit, if a baggy pants devotee gets nabbed more than once, he/she could face up to 30 days in jail.

AUGUST 28–A Wisconsin man who broke into a number of women’s homes to steal their bras and underwear was charged Tuesday with five counts of felony burglary. According to an affidavit filed in Winnebago Circuit Court, Christopher Sullivan illegally entered the residences and took undergarments and photographs from at least five women. Later he would superimpose the women’s images onto pictures taken from pornographic magazines and mail them to the women along with other creepy pictures that used Barbie dolls as props. Sullivan, 43, told officers from the Oshkosh Police Department that the mailings were “intended to scare his victims.” One of his alleged victims received an envelope with two Polaroids, one with “three Barbie dolls upside down, naked with their heads cut off” and the other with the woman’s head next to a decapitated Barbie and the message “your head will be cut off, skinned, boiled, baked, we will have your skull on our table of sacrifice” written next to the picture. During questioning, Sullivan told police he chose one of his victims, an upstairs neighbor, because “she and her boyfriend were having very loud sex” and that angered him. He admitted choosing another victim because she “caught his attention” while riding a lawnmower in a bikini. He also told police he would classify himself as a “sexual predator,” but his religion prevented him from crossing the line into raping or murdering because that would be a “grave sin.” In a search of his home, police turned up magazines and videos, at least one of which referenced Ted Bundy, as well as three headless Barbie dolls with metal rods through their knees. They also recovered a handwritten “confession” which included an admission that “Recently I sent some threatening letters to; did damage to some property; and stole from some people that made me angry and frustrated.” Sullivan, pictured above in a Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office mug shot, faces more than sixty years in prison if convicted on all of the charges.

AUGUST 15–Meet Jennifer Rosenberg. The Texas woman used her 12-year-old daughter as a designated driver so that she could be chauffeured to a Longview bar to celebrate her 35th birthday. Rosenberg was arrested Wednesday night after her child was pulled over by cops for a traffic violation (the girl told officers she had just dropped her mother off at a bar about two miles from their home). Longview Police Department officers responded to Leon’s Bar and Grill, where they arrested Rosenberg on a child endangerment charge, according to a probable cause affidavit. She was booked into the Gregg County jail, where the below mug shot was taken. It is unclear whether Rosenberg planned on having her daughter ferry her back home after the evening’s merrymaking.
