The man who donated $700K to buy Alicia Keys’ life back
According to TMZ.com, pharmaceutical mogul Steve Rahr donated up to $700,000 today to buy back the lives of Alicia Keys, Kim Kardashian, Lady Gaga, Usher and other narcissistic celebrities on social networking websites.
Celebs such as Ryan Seacrest, Khloe K. and La La Vazquez participated in the ‘Dead Celebrities’ campaign by taking ghoulish portraits lying in open caskets.
The stars logged offline on Tuesday, Nov. 30, and vowed not to sign back on until $1 million had been raised for the ‘Keep A Child Alive’ cause. Keys and the other stars hoped that their fans deemed them worthy enough to cough up the cash within 24 hours.
But 18 hours postmortem, Alicia Keys arose from the dead to leave a tweet on her Twitter account nudging her followers to go donate. Her followers responded with anger and complaints that Keys had broken her vow to stay offline.
By this morning, the donations reached the $200,000 mark and appeared to stall there until Rahr’s generous donation.

They underestimated the power they had over their fans. I am sure not only did this Steve Rahr donate but they also came out of pocket as well. Even though the cause was good, I still believe they did this for their own selfish need. I hope that money does go directly to the cause and nothing else
As much as I understood their cause, I think that their way of alerting everyone to it was off (way off with that coffin thing). If I thought of donating (which I didn’t), that coffin thing totally turned me off to the point that I think it was somewhere near evil doing and not intended to help people/children in need.

It was actually close to $300k not $200k by this morning, lol. Then stalled there for a few hrs until mister big wig Rahr threw in his bet for $700k. Funny, TMZ says he posted a $500k wager. Then who posted the xtra $200k?? The real time line of the donations via Google suggests bets from $300k to $1 mil occurred between 4-5pm est. Looks like the narcissists posted the smaller increments to $500k then coerced Stewart Rahr to post the rest for PR purposes! Alicia Keys #EPIC_FAIL!!!

Anyway, I will stand by my stance and say any charity is good charity. Stop looking for negative things to point out. They are doing something and if you can’t donate….then donate your time to a cause.

They are all full of themselves. There is nothing wrong with people giving the side eye towards giving to charities, we are not certain who hands the funds gets filtered through.. and what is being done with it. Its best to help the man on the street, neighbor, or people you can directly affect. Celebs have been swindling money for years through their charities, and taking from people that are not as fortunate. Also, the get huge tax incentives from the government, so money is flowing everywhere…
Working in the public sector any charity is not always good charity, I wish people could really see how many of these non profit organizations rake in the doe and the people who need the money never see the money. It amazes me how many people will cosign anything

For me, my thought is I can’t control what happens with the money once I donate. As long as I give from my heart with good intention that’s what moves me.

I just donated to an organization and like you said I don’t know if my money will be used for its true intentions but the fact is I gave it from my heart and I pray that it is used properly.

I’ve worked for a 501c3 organization (non-profit) and if only some of you KNEW where your “donations” actually went and how the “top rung” of the organizations lived off of your “donation”- you’d be side-eying everything that didnt allow you to put your donation into a needy person’s hand DIRECTLY.
The whole “well I gave the money, I’m not concerned where it goes, I’ll just pray it gets there” is lazy, and honestly, just denotes a lack of accountability. When you pay your rent/mortgage on time every month- you follow & check your statement to make sure they receive it and cash it, don’t you. If you receieved an eviction/foreclosure notice saying you were behind 5 months and about to be set out, you wouldn’t say: “darn- well, I paid on time, I sure hope they receive it.” NO!! You’d be all up under them checking for deposited checks, statements, and some more stuff.
C’mon people. If charity is so “important” and every little bit of “giving to the needy” helps- then you can at least do your part to make sure SOMEBODY who is ACTUALLY needy gets the money, and not the CFO who requires a stretch escalade to take him to/from the airport/train station for his arrivals/departures 3-5x/week. <—– Witnessed this first hand.

Also- on this story- I (and many others) knew damn well this effort would fail. Forget the fact that the campaign was eerie, and that the participants were narcissists who just wanted to prove to each other which one of them had the most “loyal” fanbase…but the fact that every dollar “does not count” (as there was a $10 donation MINIMUM) sealed the coffin (no pun intended) on this campaign.

I honestly think they would have made more money if they said “I’ll stay off of social media for one hour for every dollar this campaign raises.” I’d have given a whole $20 to them then….
Nonethless- its shameful & embarassing, that after capping at about 200k, they had to all throw in their money (as they should have done in the 1st place), then find an “angel donator” to fund the rest of it. However, I bet they probably aren’t feeling themselves as hard as they were last week. It’s humble pie for a little while, now.
