According to a Reuters quote on the @BreakingNews official Twitter page, Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s controversial visit to Cuba “was licensed by US Treasury Department for cultural purposes.”
Does anyone find it strange that the U.S. Treasury Dept. would issue a travel permit to Beyonce and Jay Z for any reason? The U.S. State Department is usually the entity that issues such travel permits — and, according to them, they didn’t even know Beyonce and Jay Z were in Cuba. So is Mr. Obama (Beyonce’s knight in shining armor) galloping to Beyonce’s rescue with a last-minute heretofore unknown permit?
According to a report on Theweek.com, a State Department official said it had “no prior knowledge” of Beyonce and Jay Z’s trip, and “the U.S. Interest Section in Havana says it doesn’t know if they got permits, and neither the Carters nor their representatives have explained how they traveled to Cuba.”
Outraged Cuban Americans are calling the Carters’ trip “propaganda” for Cuban tourism. Cubans in Miami are planning to protest Beyonce’s concert there in July and Jay Z’s show in August. Anyone who lives in Miami knows how powerful the Anti-Castro Cubans are. They are the wealthiest immigrant group — who control the balance of power in Miami — and they can get a concert canceled with the quickness.
Beyonce and Jay Z believe they are entitled to do what they want and to go where they want, but they will soon regret their decision to let President Obama use them as shameless propaganda vehicles.
