President Obama has angered conservatives (and especially Fox News) with his latest statements on the controversial Zimmerman verdict. Obama said he could have been Trayvon Martin 35 years ago.
He said he too was followed in stores because of his skin color. Obama questioned the outcome if Trayvon had been white and had a gun that night.
“If a white male teen would have been involved in this scenario, both the outcome and the aftermath might have been different,” Obama said.
Obama also praised Martin’s parents for handling the Zimmerman not guilty verdict with “great dignity”. Obama made the statements during what the NY Post described as a surprise appearance Friday at the White House.
He instructed the department of justice to investigate the Stand Your Ground law that was part of the instructions given to the jury at the start of the recent trial of the man who killed him.
On Thursday, the U.S. Department of Justice, headed by Attorney General Eric Holder, ordered the Sanford, Florida police department not to return the gun used by George Zimmerman to shoot Martin. The request indicates the DOJ is pressing ahead with a probe into Zimmerman’s racial profiling of Martin.
Additionally, there are rumors that Zimmerman planned to sell the gun in a private auction.
