Loyal reader Yvette sent this link to Marquez Tolbert’s Gofundme page to raise funds for his ongoing burn treatment.
Tolbert, 21, is one of the unfortunate young men who was badly burned when Martin Blackwell threw a pot of scalding hot water on him and his boyfriend while they lay in bed.
Blackwell, 48, is the live-in boyfriend of Tolbert’s boyfriend’s mother.
Blackwell told police he threw “just a little hot water” on the men because he was “disgusted” by their relationship. The attack happened in February.
Authorities are considering filing federal hate crime charges against Blackwell who is being held in the Fulton County jail without bond.
Tolbert suffered 2nd and 3rd degree burns on his neck, back and arms. He spent 10 days at Grady Hospital undergoing painful surgeries to graft skin from his thigh to replace the burned areas on his back and arms.
Tolbert will need to wear compression garments every day for the next 2 years to keep the newly grafted skin from developing keloids.
He will also need physical therapy to help him move his limbs because the burned skin is tight and restricts his movement.
Tolbert has thus far raised $18,000 toward his goal of $30,000.
