Floyd Mayweather Jr and rapper Kodak Black say they will continue wearing Gucci despite calls for boycotts amid accusations of racism.
Gucci was accused of racism after social media users complained one of its sweaters resembled blackface. The ensuing controversy prompted the fashion house to pull the balaclava sweater from online stores.
In an interview with TMZ, the champion boxer said he would continue to drop a mansion payment at Gucci stores.
Floyd says he is not a follower. He refuses to be told what to do by uneducated rappers on social media who constantly call for boycotts over every perceived slight.
“See, the thing is this, I live for myself. I do what I want to do,” said Floyd. “I’m not a follower. You know when everybody else they say, ‘Everybody gonna boycott?’ I say guess what, this boy gonna get on a yacht and live life.”
He added: “We all know racism still exists but that’s not gonna stop my drive. I’ve got friends from all walks of life and to me of course, black lives matter first. But my thing is this, I’m gonna continue to go out there live life and be happy.”
Rapper Kodak Black also resisted the calls for boycotts against Gucci, Prada and Moncler whose products supposedly resemble blackface.
In a video posted on social media on Tuesday, Kodak said he will not stop wearing Gucci amid the sweater controversy.
Kodak said “there are a lot of ski masks” on the market and “black people do be reaching for no reason, just reaching for little sh-t.”
