As some of you may already know, loyal reader PYT_504 recently won the title of Ms Opelousas Spice and Music Queen at a pageant in Louisiana. Congrats to PYT! We so proud of you girl!
PYT got the chance to give a speech before the mayor. Her profile photo also won Most Photogenic in the pageant. According to PYT, the pageant honors the history of creole people and their culture in Louisiana.
I’ll let PYT give you all the details:
Well the pageant was for creoles in Louisiana. It was based upon knowledge and history within our culture. Also based upon the knowledge and history of the music we listen to here in Louisiana which is called ZYDECO. (zah-dee-co).
It wasnt based upon skin color, hair texture, nor eye color as some people think that is what creole people are supposed to look like. It was not a beauty contest. I don’t get down that mess. A festival will be held in my honor and also to honor the Spice and Music culture here in Louisiana. The city it will be held in is Opelousas, LA.
My official title is Ms Opelousas Spice and Music Queen. The other girl that was in the audience in the 1st pic is the Teen Queen and she is a white girl so having knowledge about the culture is not based on heritage. The festival will be held June 5th – June 8th!!! at our racetrack and casino.
Congrats. Are you required to do anything else commericals, presentations, etc.
Get it boo! Congrats!!!
Congrats PYT_504……have fun at your festival. You Go Girl!
Congrats PYT!!! My daughter’s grandmother is Creole I am going to have to tell her about this.

LOL @ the title “Opelousas Spice and Music Queen” sounds like something that should be in a cooking cabinet to add flavoring to some greens. LOL

Congrats PYT! Being Creole myself it’s nice to see events that focused on the history and culture and not what people percieve Creole to be. I hope this leads to other good things/events for you.

omg congratulations PYT!!
sandra it was so nice for you to profile her up here too. super!
Congratulations!! How exciting for you! I’m glad you mentioned what the contest was NOT about because a lot of people have misconceptions of what it means to be “Creole”.
“Creoles are generally known as a people of mixed French, African, Spanish, and Native American ancestry, most of who reside in or have familial ties to Louisiana. Research has shown many other ethnicities have contributed to this culture including, but not limited to, Chinese, Russian, German, and Italian.
This culture began as an offspring of the Old World and the New when this country was still being colonized. Creoles are not one thing or the other, and have lived their lives being misunderstood, misrepresented, and misinterpreted. In the past, under White government, Creoles were not allowed to be an equal part of society. Blacks, free and slaves, did not feel Creoles were part of their world either. Because of this rejection, Creoles had a strong bond with one another and had to create their own world and culture. They were self-sufficient and relied on each other. Creoles were landowners, artists, teachers, and business people.
Even today this bond among Creoles nationwide is strong. There is tremendous pride in knowing where they come from. Their culture and heritage, rarely acknowledged in spite of its uniqueness, is worthy and deserving of attention and preservation; without it an important part of the American experience could be lost.”

Thought the very same thing..opened up the site and thought WOW haven’t heard anything about her (Cynda Williams) in a moment!!!
Congrats girly! Also, Sandra that’s a good look posting this on your site.
That is a good look posting one of your readers doing her thang I am very proud even though I don’t know u(lol) but my husbands family is from New Orleans & they are Creole so I am glad that they give recognition to things like that!! very pretty pic by the way!!
congrats to her. im glad she made the distinction of what creole is for those who dont know. im also creole. my family is from the same area. we’re from sunset-grand coteau in st.landry parish. i also have family in opelousas since it is very close. ignorant people usually think that creole is all about a certain look when its really a culture and way of life. im creole but im also darkskinned.so many people will dispute it but trust you cant get any frenchy than me ‘che! i have deep roots on both sides of my family in creole culture and we come in all shades. my greatgrandfather was whitw, my grandma is mulatto, her husband, my grandfather was dark, my child is light, so it does matter your skin, we are all the same.
Good for you girl!
I will echo ‘coco’ thanks for enlightening those of us in the room like me who had no idea, about “Creole” Just one of those things I never really thought about. like a little white kid wanting to play with a little black kid unless hatred is in the home kids don’t see color. but I have learned today that Creole is not a specific skin color but a culture of ppl who know they don’t all look alike but share a rich prideness for their culture. Thanks for the info and PYT, don’t let that big crown go to your head. lol.
Congrats PYT!
Wow, what a small world. Congrats on your crown, girlie!
My great-grandmother (who turns 93 this weekend) is from Opelousas, as is my grandmother, and I used to go there every summer when I was a kid. I’ll have to tell them about this festival – they’ll get a kick out of it!
Lookin good girl…congrats!!
WOWWWWWWWW Thanks auntie Sandra! I didnt think that you would really post it! hahaha But thanks for giving me the opportunity to be on your page! I love coming to this site and hopefully I can bring my country-bunkin butt to ATL soon!
Umm I dont know who Cynda is? Imma have to look up her pic to see if we look alike.
Also thanks to everyone for your support and for showing me love! You know I got love for ya’ll ( my dys-funk-sha-nal family on the web MUAHHHHH)
Oh and to those who wanted more info on the culture or cook books on creole cooking I have plenty since I won this title good lawd!!! Go to my festival myspace page http://www.myspace.com/spiceandmusicqueen08 Ill be happy to mail them to you and spread the knowledge and if you cook something out the book.. ummmm invite a sista to eat!
Smokie.. big ups to you for posting some of the history of the culture and way of life!
Coco— heck nawwwwwwww it doesnt matter your skin color!!! That is one thing that I will make sure that everyone is aware of! and not everyone who is creole is from New Orleans or Cane River!!! So i got some work ahead of me, but trust me I am still the same ol me.. nothing has changed one bit!
Again thanks auntie sandra!!! You may have to re-open registration cause I just added this link to my festival page!!!
Congrats PYT!!!!

^^ girl no you didn’t just break it down with the che’ . lmao my dad kills me with that .
even though i am a part of that culture because of my dad , i am guilty of thinking that all creole people had to be from a certain area or look a certain way . it’s nice to see from both you, pyt, & smokie that is not the case at all.
Good look!
Most creole people are brown.
I’m so proud of PYT AND those who contributed to this thread; ALL POSITIVE!!!!!
i made an error. i meant to say “skin color DOESNT matter, we are all the same” but i think it was understood. great piece sandra! thanks for putting my people on the map
