The Real Reason Why Prop. 8 Passed in California

San Francisco’s Mayor was taught a lesson in humility yesterday.

After gay marriages became legal in California in June, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom — who is gay — boasted, “gay marriage is here to stay, whether you like it or not!”

He might as well have said, “We’re coming for your little boys, whether you like it or not!”

Well, opponents of gay marriage didn’t like it or his attitude. So Californians said “YES” to proposition 8 and voted gay marriages out of existence yesterday. 70% of those who voted for Prop. 8 were black or Hispanic.

And this time the ban on same-sex marriages is amended to the Constitution which means it will not be repealed.

That means all those marriage licenses issued to gay couples are now null and void and California residents are asking, how do you like it now?

No it doesn’t mean that the gay people that were married before the prop passed are null and void. That law was not in effect so the ones that are still married will still remain.

And it’s still amazing to me how they want to point out that african americans are the majority as to why the prop didn’t pass. What difference does it make the point is GAY PEOPLE CAN NO LONGER GET MARRIED but they still have the same rights as any couple thats married. They still can share health insurance they still can collect off life insurance so as far as I am concered they are GAYRRIED

You amaze me sometimes Sandra. Even before people started using Mayor Newsoms “gaffe” I knew that this would pass. Why? because California is not as GD progressive as you would think. Leave L.A. or The Bay Area and you will see how the rest of CA thinks. And and FYI a majority of CA residents ARE NOT black. They only represent 6.2% of the population. That is hardly a majority. You aren’t taking into account the Latino Vote or the religious zealots that are white.

The funny thing is that people that supported this prop are in for a rude awakening because the fight is not over. You really think this would be the end of it? It won’t end until equal rights are granted to all of Californias citizens.

I don’t either there is really nothing much we can do about it so it is what it is. I do believe that marriage should be between a man and a woman but here in CA there are laws that allows us to put our significant others on our insurances married or not. So if together is what they want to be then the law shouldn’t be the one to stop them.

Grrrr Ms Sandra… Hear you go again.. I swear I don’t know where you get your facts. Gavin Newsome is not gay. You may want him to be since he chooses to champion gay rights, but there are a whole bunch of non-blacks who championed civil rights… so being a part of the group is not a requirement.

I am from California and there was big scandal back in ’06 a year after Newsome divorced his wife, because he had an affair with one of the wives of a campaign staffer of his.. He just got remarried (to a woman) in a beautiful ceremony in California’s wine country in July of this year.

Hey it’s possible that all these women are just his “beard” but he hasn’t come out so can’t make him gay.

Shanie if what you say is true (about them sharing benefits and insurance and etc) and that the previous marriages aren’t null and void then I don’t see an issue with this. Marriage is supposed to be between a MAN and a WOMAN…the main issue was benefits and visitation rights and all of that other mess and they now have it so I think the ruling is fine…imo.

sandra, i totally agree w/your opinion on the above-posted ad. also, a lot of older Blacks (and other minorities) felt like the gay marriage ban should not have been compared to racial discrimination, as you are born Black, Latino, etc. and can never hide that or pretend to be who you are when it’s convenient. gays are allowed to eat, drink, work and live where ever they want, so the fight is not quite the same. the Latino vote had a great impact as well. (for the record, i’m Black and an L.A. resident, and I have nothing bad to say about gay marriage- i just think their ads and leaders’ attitudes were not sensitive enough for those who are not as exposed to gay culture.)

I love how a few people think their views and beliefs are way more important than everyone elses therefore their beliefs should be law.

It really makes me sick. You are totally fine to believe whatever the hell you want, but to impose your views on everyone else making it the law of the land is bigoted and discriminatory. The state of CA should not be taking peoples religious beliefs into consideration when it comes to their business because there is that separation of church and state thing, you may have heard about it. If I can get married without god involved then so should someone who is gay.

It is also your belief that gay people choose to be gay, but guess what? There are plenty of damn people that think being gay is not a choice, YET you want to hold your beliefs higher than someone elses and make them law. I think that’s being discriminated against. I may be wrong.

I’m from California and I was a little shocked it passed. But then I had to remember the rest of Cali outside of LA and San Francisco. Some parts of the middle portion of California can be just as rural as Kansas or Idaho. So while some cities here may be progressive there are alot that aren’t and a lot of black people don’t live in all of those areas.

If democracy was doing it’s job, Iwonder how would you feel if before the late 60s the rights of African Americans were put on the ballot??? We would never be able to obtain our right.

That said, putting civil legislation is stupid. It only abuses democracy and exploits the prejudices of others, mainly because this only pertains to a certain demographic. The bill did not affect of good majority of people voting for it and they knew it. I feel that some people can’t stand the fact of a certain group of people to be granted anything by the law.

Very sticky politics here. If I were gay, I’d certainly want the rights that other Americans share, the right to get married. But since I’m not gay, why not call it a “civil union”, give them their rights and move on? After all, in most casesm,gayness is not chosen. I believe thaqt most gays are born gay. I often ask my husband, who doesn’t believe this theory, when he made his choice not to be gay. He said he never had to. So I win the argument, with him that is. Let people live their lives and let God judge their gayness, just like He will judge our sins, ie adultery, murder, blasphemy, fornication, etc. Peace.

And I don’t think gays are trying to force people to accept thier bedroom habits, they are not asking for anyones peronal endorsment or seal of approval just thier own right to pursue happiness. Making homosexual marraige illegal will not make homosexuality go away, nothing will.
