As I type this, it’s a little after 4 p.m. over in London, England where I was born and spent my early childhood.
The First Lady Michelle Obama and the Queen of England are scheduled to meet today. The outcome of this meeting ought to be interesting.
My mom often repeats her favorite story about the queen — who she doesn’t very much like. When my brothers and me were little kids she took us to meet the queen on a day that the queen sets aside to personally greet her loyal subjects outside Buckingham Palace.
As the queen approached us in line, my mom extended her hand to shake the queen’s hand. But instead of shaking my mom’s hand, the queen totally ignored her and moved on to the next person in line — a white woman. To this day my mom won’t forgive the queen for that slight.
Let’s hope Michelle Obama fares better with the queen than my mom did — especially after the way the Obamas treated the PM and his wife during their visit to D.C. last month.
