Aside from the fact that i thought this was Angel from Concrete Poop, I don’t see anything wrong with it. I see a big girl who is supremely confident in her fineness and doesn’t care what society thinks. Don’t you love it?

But I seriously think that they need to talk to this young lady and let her know that although being heavy is something you shouldn’t be low self esteemed about, at the same time letting her know her health could be at risk. Why are so many black women letting fat be the new slim? Its one thing to be thick with hips and thighs but when your arms and everything else blow up and your cholesterol sky rockets its some things to think about.

I’m sorry, but there is NOTHING flattering about this pic of Gabby. I applaud her confidence, but to me this picture of her only highlights the flaws in her body. Now, I’m a big girl too, but I still feel that there are certain clothes you cannot wear when you are a certain size. Plus, the majority of outfits I’ve seen Gabby in are too tight.

Ummmm wow, I feel sorry for her like it has to suck for people to laugh at you and not with you and then you don’t even realize that’s what they are doing. She is a beautiful, young woman but she needs to lose some weight. Not for aesthetic purposes but for health reasons. Hypertension and diabetes have taken out too many members of my family. We all have to get fit and stay fit. You don’t have to be a size 0, but just get to a healthy, happy size. Because even skinny people can have diabetes and hypertension.

They have all the tools to create a setting and look that would look good for her on the cover because, well she doesn’t just have sexy for obvious reasons. At the end of the day(lol)…..People can talk about gabby’s weight forever. She’s not gonna lose weight until she’s 100 ready to. I struggle with mine from I was a lil gurl, and all the teasing, and everything fam had to say didn’t mean anything…..I’d just grab somthing else to eat. Until about last year, I decided this was somthing I wanted to do for me, and no on else.
Its good she has confidence and loves her body, if she does love it, who else is gonna lvoe it.

I think the whole issue is that I am starting to notice a whole lot more of black women in bigger sizes. This is not cute at all. Your doctor can tell you the ideal weight you need to be for your height. Big fat is in to way cute at all and I do not know why some of us women are on this site saying it’s okay.
I live in Maryland and every time I go to the mall and the store, guaranteed I see a couple of overweight black women. This is starting to become an epidemic and it is far behind being comfortable in your skin. When you sweating tremendously in the summer, or when your heart starts burning more often, or you have sleep deprivation, I guess all that stuff is alright as long as your confident.
We are a contradiction to ouselves. One moment we are upset that we don’t have enough representation of our multi-fasited selves and the next we are dogging each other out. Self-hate at it’s finest. If she was light-skinned, would the statements would read “She’s cute for a fat girl”? It’s because she is DARK, and PLUS size we are even more cruel.
She supposed to go hide now? Monique better not say shyt other than you go girl!! Monique promoted be happy and fat for years, only recently has she been able to affored to not hate skinny bytches.

And if they are going to be dressing her then her stylist needs to know how to work with her body and better cloth her in things that will flatter her body. but seriously when you body is collecting fat in places that it shouldn’t it is very difficult to cloth parts of your body.
I have a big butt, I have a small waist. I try not to let my butt get bigger for fear some of my cloths will no longer fit and instead of looking like a woman with curves, I look like an oddity. I refuse to let my weight go up. I have seen with it has done to family members and it will not happen to me.
Gabby may not be in the best physical shape or health, but everyone deserves to see their likeness on a magazine or two.

I feel you. I just hope she comes around to this issue before it is too late. There is a young girl that is a friend of a friend and she recently had a mild heart attack, of course due to her weight. My aunt smokes and is very over weight now she deals with narcolepsy and has breathing problems. I just do not like to see big black women who do not think about their health, not saying that most don’t. I just don’t want to hear our beautiful selves dying because were overweight. That is just a stupid reason to die.

I agree. I mean there are a LOt of shows out about obesity, and it is not a thing to overlook. I am not skinny but I know that I have gained some weight in the past year and I am very unhappy with myself because of it. Not for the fact certain number of my clothing cant fit, but more importantly, I do find my body reacting differently than it used to. I used to be 155 then I gained about 50lbs and I dont feel right at all. People always say “but you don’t look like your fat”. Im like I FEEL IT. lol

@crislex, i am trying to do better just because i realize that i don’t want to be taking 40 damn pills when i’m older. i overhead a brazilian chick talking about the biggest surprise to her is how all of our portions and cans and bottles and packages in the grocery store are larger than the sizes in brazil. meaning the same product is larger here in the states. we supersize and oversize everything. she also said there is more sugar in american foods than the same foods in brazil. that kinda woke me up. i’m trying to eat off of a smaller plate not because i’m trying to be skinny but now i realize that i take more than i can eat and continue to eat after i’m full. that whole southern eating and finish your plate kind of mentality/upbringing.

Looking at the pic we do not know the intent of Vanity Fair’s photography director. We do not know if they secretly believe this young lady si a powerful actress of is she the stereotypical image of a black woman. A mammy of our day.
I think my feelings go both ways on this picture. While I disagree with her weight, I also see a happy and beautiful young lady. I also feel at the same time that although this is not Vanity Fair’s nature to put a woman of her size in the mag, it also gets me wondering to what their true intentions are.
Its hard to say. Im happy and confused at the same time.

Some people care more than the actual person, if Gabby felt uncomfortable because of her looks then she wouldnt have done the shoot. Its seems like others have a problem, not her. Unless your thin yourself then you have nothing to talk about, you may walk out side on the daily and someone is looking at you like “you need to lose weight”.
I don’t know why everyone is mad at Peachizz when the last Gabby post 85% of the comments on there was negative……………….I don’t have a prob. with Gabby but again that outfit is not fitting on her body……..I think that is the problem her dress is unflattering on her….

In a million years Vanity Fair would not ask you to even grace a single page in the middle of the magazine, based off your attitude alone. She may very well be working on her weight right now, damn she just got on, give her a minute. The girl had a life before Precious, and that’s the size she was in that life. They needed her that size to fit the role. Maybe it took for her to get in the industry to get serious about her health, I don’t know, but I DO know this, for every finger one points, five more are pointing back at you.
I don’t feel VF was taking a stab at Precious – they have waaay to many clients for that shyt, and since when did they become an outlet for comedy and sidebar antics? Who does that? Seriously? She wasn’t on the cover of Mad Magazine.
I think they showcased her because this intelligent sister, extras and all, has something to offer the world as an actress, whether she’s big or small. She may not be nice on the eyes to some, but that rule applies to everybody.

I’m shocked at all the hypocrisy in this post. You guys clown Rihanna for her forehead, Jay Z for his lips and nose, Alicia Keys for her acne, Fabolous for his teeth, Jazze Pha for his over weightedness, Swizz Beats for his nose, Tiny for her whole face, Lil Wayne for looking like a “gremlin”, Puffy for his teeth, The Dream for looking like “Teddy Ruxpin” and after all that…everybody laughs and has a great time at the expense of features that NONE of these people can control. However, because this woman is so seriously an underdog, there is an intense pressure to save her from the cruel world of being made fun of. And worse, from reading Peachizz’s email I dont see why people are going hard on her. She said nothing disrespectful about her.
What’s wrong with the picture. Well I’ll start…black and white doesnt suit everybody. I learned that in photography class. Plus her dress is black which against her complexion in a black and white picture doesnt work. Secondly, with her head back like that, it highlights the extra weight around her face, chin area. The dress is not a flattering shape for her body and should be longer because the fat that is pooled around her ankles appears that she suffers from elephantiasis (an actual condition, I’m not in any way being snide). Those are all facts. Vanity Fair, if indeed they were using this picture, are wrong for using a picture from a photoshoot in which there were probably many other flattering poses of her. Would they take a zoomed in picture of Tyra Banks or Rihanna from an aerial angle that only accentuates their foreheads? Or a profile shot of someone with a nose like Jennifer Aniston. NO! So why they would choose to portray this woman like this is beyond me. Dont attack somebody for emailing their opinion to Sandra. And realistically, stop “saving” this girl from the harsh world of criticism because she entered it, and will have to deal with it. Sweet as she is or not. You protecting her and then attacking the “bully” like she’s your little sister isnt making anything better. And attacking Peachizz on her own weight which i saw someone do is absolutely unnecessary and hurtful.
If this was a fat man it would be open season.

Yeah Isc, I feel you on that. But these dudes have been in the game long enough to do something about their issues; you know…prove themselves. And granted, Gabby was probably prepped to accept the criticism that was coming her way. But I just think we have a responsibility to build up and not tear down. This girl ain’t caught no dope case, ain’t stole nobody husband, ain’t strung out on drugs, ain’t narcissistic, nothing. She came through with a clean slate in a very controversial role that many people would probably say no to. I just feel she deserves better from us her first run out the gate, that’s all. I respect your point though – because it is valid.
Her being on the cover at that size is not the problem. The problem is they did no retouching and picked an unflattering pose and clothing. They style and retouch and on shoots for skinny models so there should be no differnce for her. She is all shiny and exposing all her unflattering parts like her arms up like that. They could have put an outfit that was more fitting and complimentary. Her weight is not the issue in this photo, its the blatent attempt to NOT do all they can to make the photo flattering, whch they do for everyone else. I am a designer and retouching is done on everyone even at kid’s photo places in the mall! VF is just wrong not Gabby!

I have to agree with you, the ignorance I’ve seen on this post has been astounding :?. I would have thought the readers on this forum would be more intelligent and open minded than this. I feel like I’ve been reading comments from fakeout or one of those other trash sites. It’s very rare for Vanity Fair to put a Black Woman on they’re cover, yet alone a Black Woman that is full figured. But instead of getting props about that she’s getting trashed by her own people. anyway, peachizz did not comment on gabby’s intellect, innermost feelings, etc. NONE OF US KNOW THIS BROAD! she simply brought the pic to sandra’s attention and said it wasn’t flattering. then the convo devolved into black hate, light-skin vs. dark skin, personal jibes, etc. as though no white blogs exist that comment on pics and people’s (who we DON’T KNOW) lives. true hypocrisy.
