According to one of my spies in the J Records mail room, the label shipped 400,000 of Monica’s Still Standing CDs to stores. Yet many fans all over the country report the CD is sold out everywhere. The insider said the label is scrambling frantically to get out more of Mo’s records to the stores in what’s called “drop shipments.”
On Tuesday, the day Still Standing dropped, over 800 fans turned out for Monica’s CD signing at a DTLR store in Camp Creek (a record number for that location). 3 hours later, 300 fans were left still standing in the parking lot awaiting their turn to see Mo. She promised them she would return today (Mar. 25) to sign more CDs.
The J Records insider said Monica sold close to 100K units on the first day!! Amazingly, Monica is projected to sell 165-200K in the first week and she could give teen idol Justin Bieber a serious run for the #1 spot.
This is major because it means that J Records could have shipped Monica’s CDs gold! If Monica’s hard core fans can’t find any CDs in the stores and they shipped 400K, the label could have shipped 500,000 easily and given Monica gold status.
The insider blamed BMG head honcho Barry Weiss for the bungled shipment error. As head of BMG, Weiss oversees J Records in addition to other labels under the BMG umbrella. The miserly Weiss controls the purse strings and he probably has no clue how devoted Monica’s fans are. Even with bare minimum marketing and promotion, Mo’s fans still supported her.
J Records gets an ‘L’ for this one.
