A stone sculpture honoring the late civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. was unveiled on the National Mall in Washington D.C. today.
The gigantic ‘Stone of Hope’ sculpture of King was created by Chinese artist Lei Yixin. The statue was erected near the George Washington Monument at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial. The memorial is the first on the National Mall to honor an African-American man and the first to honor a person who did not serve as president.
Engraved on one side of the statue are the words “OUT OF THE MOUNTAIN OF DESPAIR: A STONE OF HOPE.”
The monument will officially be dedicated on August 28, the 48th anniversary of King’s historic “I have a dream” speech.
When it comes time for President Barack Obama to have a statue erected in his honor he can only hope that his statue will be as impressive as this one!

You too
A beautiful statute for a worthy man. I have to see this in person.
I’m taking my mom to see this. She loves her some Martin Luther The King
Sandra, did you learn about MLK growing up in England?
#realquestion
@ Yall still crazy:
Nope. I arrived in America the same year he was assassinated. I didn’t hear about his magnificent achievements and how he gave his life for us until I came to America. Edit to add that I was a little kid in 1968. So I don’t remember him being shot or any rioting or any of that.
If only I could see this! I’m so proud
Wow…truly amazing. I was actually brought to tears when I saw these pictures, thinking of all the struggles our parents and their parents went through…for us to end up here. Not to say there aren’t some things to be proud of but I know some of them must be turning in their graves over the stupidity we put up with and put out there ourselves.
Sandra, that’s really cool. #realtalk
Hey Fay

I get chills when I see the commercial using his speech and showing the old folks and young folks sitting down at the dinner table.
They are opening the statue up to DMV residents tomorrow. I’m hoping I can sneak away from work long enough to go see it. This is historic!
Inspiring….. I definitely want to go to this
Can we get one of Malcolm X….oh my bad I digress congrats to the King fam
DC is gonna be jumping this weekend

I’d love to see that as well but it will never happen. Without Malcolm there is no Martin and without Martin there is no Malcolm. Malcolm scarred the devil out of them and Martin offered a more pc alternative.
Back on topic, this is absolutely beautiful! I want to see this and take my children too. Oh how I wish they both were still living. Maybe we’d been in a different space today.
Great Martin my man.. and i might add We are BLACK Americans.. not AFRICAN Americans… please understand.. They are honoring a BLACK American Man.. African Americans are Africans that comes to USA and ascertain citizenship… Black Americans are We who were born in America and are BLACK/Colored..
This term African American came about, during the census i forget what year, when your government decided it was toooo many colored folk to classify, so they decided to label us all AFRICAN Americans.. so the next time you fill out an application or survey etc.. if BLACK is not an option …check other and write in BLACK.. This was a public service announcement thank you!
WOW… That is Pretty Impressive !!! And the Fact it was created by a Chinese Artist is ALL KINDS of Interesting (To Me Too)
You are so silly E-Love
This just brought tears to my eyes…Finally something positive to wake up to! Thanks Sandra!!!
Beautiful Sculpture!
Loves it!!
it is about time…
Great Man who is definately deserving of this great honor
The beauty of living in the DC area is that I’m so close to so many historical monuments and events. I wish I could leave work and witness this in person.
I will see it during my run on the National Mall to Lincoln Memorial. Pictures coming soon….

Awwwwwhhhhhh Sandra! You said something decent about ‘ole Barack. Secretly, you really do like him huh?
I love the detailing on the statue, very life like and they didn’t try to be funny by overdueing his features. Some white people think when drawing or creating art for black people. They have to make our nose, lips, and ears way to big. Bishes be tryna be funny
