Yesterday, fans of ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars” took to online social networks and message boards to vent their frustration at the network for adding male transgender Chaz Bono to the cast.

The anger and venom displayed in hundreds of messages on the DWTS website got so out of hand that ABC removed the message board.

As a result of all the criticism, Bono’s mother, 70s pop icon Cher (of Sonny & Cher), took to her Twitter page yesterday to rally her followers in support of her “son”.

The 65-year-old disco queen tweeted:

42-year-old Bono, whose female reproductive organs are still intact, will be paired up with 23-year-old dancer Lacey Schwimmer, a regular on the show.

The public’s uneasiness with a lifestyle that they can’t even begin to comprehend is understandable. ABC does bill DWTS as a family-oriented show. But ABC is asking those same families to suspend their beliefs and disbelief to accept the fact that a 42-year-old woman who thinks she’s a man is dancing with a 23-year-old heterosexual female.

Adding to the confusion is the fact that Bono doesn’t even consider herself to be a lesbian.

The public is fully aware that taking male hormones to grow a beard does not make a female a biological male. And although society is tolerant of other people’s idiosyncrasies, some behaviors are just beyond the scope of rational explanation.

ABC’s viewers have made it clear that they will boycott the show and that they will never be tolerant of Bono’s ilk no matter how many times the liberal media puts Bono (or Derek J) in front of them. Bono will always be an aberration to them; a peculiar human being who will never be fully understood.
