Washed up rapper Soulja Boy dissolved into tears as he listened to Cissy Houston sing “Bridge Over Troubled Water” the 2012 Bet Awards in LA on Sunday. His tear-jerking moment recalled Chris Brown’s Visine stunt at the 2010 BET Awards.
Many assumed that Brown was overcome with grief during his Michael Tribute at the 2010 BET Awards, but he was actually mourning the loss of his career — just as Soulja Boy is doing now.
Soulja Boy’s tearful reaction to Cissy Houston’s tribute to her daughter Whitney wasn’t quite as dramatic as Brown’s bawling though.
Black Twitter erupted just as the first tear rolled down Soulja Boy’s cheek. The jokes (and the “Thank You Based God” memes) flew fast and furiously last night. Within minutes Soulja Boy was trending worldwide on the social network.
Soulja Boy has struggled to overcome the double losses of his brother and his career this year. The years have not been kind to him since his first hit song, “Crank Dat,” made him an overnight sensation.
An indication of how bad SB’s evening was going came when the photographers uploaded photos of SB and his girlfriend, rapper Diamond, to the wire services with the caption: “Soulja Boy and his guest.” Ouch.
