Desmond Bryant

A Miami couple say they feared for their lives when a drunken NFL player ripped the doorknob off their front door and tried to break the door down.

Police say Desmond Bryant, 27, was “extremely intoxicated” when he asked a cab driver to let him out at a house a few doors down from his home on Feb. 24.

Isaac Baker told the Miami Herald he awoke at 5:30 a.m. one Sunday last month to the sound of someone pounding on the front door of his home in an upscale neighborhood in North Miami Beach.

He said Bryant began yanking the doorknob, and even ripped the knob off the door. Baker said he held the door shut with all his might while his wife frantically dialed 911.

They were scared,” the family’s attorney, Robert Fiore, told The Plain Dealer of Cleveland, according to the Miami Herald. Fiore filed the lawsuit Monday in Miami-Dade circuit court. “My client was holding on for dear life,” he said.

The couple have filed a lawsuit against the NFL star. The 6-foot-6, 311-pound defensive end just signed a $34 million contract with the Cleveland Browns last week.

Bryant’s mugshot from that night trended on Twitter.com and went viral on social networks. The mugshot provided comedic material for late night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel.

“If I were Desmond Bryant I would intentionally get arrested again just so I could re-do the mug shot,” Kimmel said.

Bryant, a Harvard graduate, apologized profusely for his actions.

“I obviously made a mistake,” Bryant said, according to The Plain Dealer of Cleveland. “I apologize for everything that happened. I feel like I have learned from it and I have moved on from that.”
