Stephanie Smith, an otherwise intelligent black woman, is making headlines in the blogoshphere for pressuring her white boyfriend into proposing to her.
Stephanie promised to make 300 sandwiches for her boyfriend Eric if he put a ring on her finger. Stephanie is aware that her stunt reeks of desperation, but she’s making those 300 sandwiches anyway.
From Cocoa Fab:
Stephanie responded to the deluge of criticism by saying, “If he wasn’t the kind of guy that was worth one sandwich, I wouldn’t be making 300 sandwiches.” She added: “And plus it was a joke. It was light, it’s funny. Come on, it’s a sandwich. It’s supposed to be just lighthearted.”
Black women have historically pressured men into marrying them for less than 300 sandwiches. That explains why the divorce rate is higher in the black community than any other race.
Smith, a reporter for New York Post, revealed she was the brains behind the 300 Sandwiches blog in a Post feature on Tuesday. Headlined “I’m 124 Sandwiches Away From An Engagement Ring,” the piece delved into the blog’s premise and Smith’s journey thus far.
Eric says he loved the first sandwich she made for him so much that he declared, “Honey, you’re 300 sandwiches away from an engagement ring!” And so the blog was born: Smith has so far made 177 tasty sandwiches, including lobster rolls and even ice cream sandwiches.
“My boyfriend, Eric, is the gourmet cook in our relationship, but he’d always want me to make him a sandwich,” she wrote. “‘Sandwiches are love,’ he says. “‘Especially when you make them. You can’t get a sandwich with love from the deli.’”
Within hours of the Post’s big reveal, word spread in the blogosphere like wildfire. Some called her desperate while others said she was misguided. In the end, Stephanie is taking all of the criticism with a grain of salt and says that she knows her boyfriend and knows he’s worth it.
