Atlanta teacher rant caught on video

An Atlanta teacher faces a disciplinary hearing — and possible termination — after her expletive-filled rant was caught on video by one of her students.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports the local school district has launched an investigation into a teacher’s unhinged meltdown inside a classroom.

The video was captured by a student on her cell phone. In the video, a teacher is heard screaming at a classroom filled with children.

The teacher yells and curses at a boy who didn’t follow her instructions to close the classroom door.

“Stop! I ain’t f*cking playing with you. You want to play? Stay home with your mama,” the teacher says in the video.

Santosha Manuel told Channel 2’s Erica Byfield that she instructed her niece to video record the teacher after the youngster informed her about the teacher’s foul language.

Manuel said she was in the building when the principal viewed the video and seconds later, the teacher was yanked from her classroom.

“Two months ago, Yvette came home and said the teacher had said ‘f you’ to her and to sit down,” Manuel said. “I told her, if it happened again, to get proof, and that’s what her cellphone was for and to record it so that I would have proof this time.”

District leaders confirmed the teacher in the video works at Crawford Long Middle School in southwest Atlanta.

Manuel said she wants answers and that the teacher needs to explain why, during her rant, she slammed her student’s mothers.

“I have a f****** job, half your mothers don’t,” the teacher says in the video.

“You are talking down to them, you are talking bad about their parents,” Manuel said.

The school district sent an email to Channel 2 Action News explaining that an investigation was ongoing and the teacher is “not currently assigned to work directly with students.”

With that being said, some of these kids cuss at the teachers and do all types of shyt and the school does nothing about it. The teachers get to a point that they dgaf. I hate to say this, but the reason Atlanta’s school system scrapes the bottom of the barrel nationwide is because the teachers couldn’t pass the same standardized tests they give their students. The teachers who scored the lowest on their exams are teaching in our inner city schools.

Shame on her for insulting these children and their mothers! This happens far too often in schools nowadays and our youth’s grades reflect it! When I was a student at Georgia Southern, I remember classmates of mine dropping their majors from Biology/Chemistry to Teaching, because they thought it was easier. I remember thinking “Great…Another one bites the dust…and goes into teaching!” This certainly not the sentiments of all teachers, I just didn’t appreciate the fact that the same individuals who were at the bottom of my class in college, because they either had bad habits or couldn’t do the work, turned around and changed their major to teaching…because it was easier. smh Lord bless these children!

Disclaimer: As my sister in Christ and rose garden KeKe has said, the teacher was out of line professionally and personally for her disparaging remarks. There is no justification for her lack of professionalism or her behavior towards the students. Her lambasting both the students and parents reflect poorly on the school, district, and the teaching profession as a whole. That being said……

I completely understand her emotionally-fueled tirade. I have taught and volunteered in the classroom at the elementary and junior high levels. Many of the children today will:

Curse you out
Physically disrespect you
Throw objects at you
Refuse to do homework (When I was growing up, homework wasn’t an option; you either did it on your terms or your parents’ terms)
Put forth little to no effort in class
Talk back
Chronic, intentional tardiness
Walk out in the middle of class
Bring weapons to school

The schools today are akin to prisons in some ways. Now keep in mind, the list is not an exhaustive list of experiences a teacher endures within an 8-9 hour day. In addition to dealing with the aforementioned, they must

Prepare students for benchmarks/standardized tests
Play the role of mama
Play the role of daddy
Play the role of big mama or paw-paw
Play the role of counselor
Play the role of pastor

In addition, some teachers go the extra mile and purchase students snacks, hygiene items, and supplies they would otherwise not have.

My point is that by the time they are through disciplining the students and playing multiple roles, there’s very little (if any) time to actually teach. In many districts, teachers are fighting with their hands behind their backs. Politics now run the classroom and teachers are expected to use a “love and logic” approach to teaching. For some students, this approach works. But when you have a child whose environment mirrors “The First 48” or “Gangland,” do you really think “Now Johnny, don’t do that” is going to work? Teachers have to meet students where they’re at. Furthermore, some of these parents should not have been allowed to breed in the first place. Some people have the delusional belief that they are entitled to breed just because they can. Mind you, they don’t have a pot to piss in, nor a window to throw it out of, but they can bring a baby into this world. Mind you, they don’t use the common sense the good Lord gave them. While I don’t agree with her saying it, her statement holds some merit, because I have experienced this same situation. Some parents mistake teachers for babysitters and think the teachers can teach their child EVERYTHING. But, the parents are the child’s first teacher, so how did they arrive at that conclusion? Collectively speaking, teachers are frustrated and many are at their breaking point; unfortunately, they are fighting against an ever-evolving machine that continues to chew them up and spit them out.

Suffice to say, my heart goes out first and foremost to those students who had to hear this. I hope they will not internalize the teacher’s comments. Secondly, I have compassion for the parents (both the lazy and productive ones) because it’s a certain tact that must be utilized when calling a spade a spade. By the same token, I believe that we have to start calling a spade a spade in the Black community. We can’t turn a blind eye to the social atrocities whose manifestations directly impact us and our generations. We can’t nut up every time someone identifies issues (as a people) in our community. How will we progress if we don’t have a starting point?

Just food for thought….I know it’s a long post, but hopefully, it will serve as the impetus for change.

There were teachers back home who WERE NOT there for the bull. One teacher was notorious for tellin kids to "get the hell out" of her class. She would also help students with hygiene and pack their backpacks with food on Friday so they wouldn't go hungry over the weekend.

My teachers had permission to smack me when I got out of line and notify Mama Butter. That was enough to keep me on the straight and narrow.

Just listened to the video. It wouldn’t play on my phone. Um the teacher is dead wrong. BUTTTTTT you can tell by the kid’s reactions they intentionally aggravate that lady. The snicker in the background. Sounds like they cuss a lot too. She should have been the adult and professional in that situation but I can understand her frustration. band clearly is exempt from the rules. we got cussed on the regular and some dudes would always try to buck and get their azzez BEAT by our director. of course, that was the 80s. we were made of different cloth then. we took our cussing and beating, laughed about it, and came back ready to play the next day.

The only thing this woman was out of order for doing was cursing…oh and talking about the kids parents…but I KNOWWWW y’all heard them kids laughing and giggling when she was yelling at them like that…that is indicative of their disrespect for her authority and role as a teacher. When I was a child and a teacher started yelling and fussing, that was cue to sit down, shut up, and listen!

My friend went into education when she was in college and she LOVED the idea of teaching children. After a good 5 years or so in the classroom she moved on to other more administrative roles in education, she just couldn’t deal with the classroom anymore. She stated the kids weren’t even the worst part, it was the parents…this mess starts at home and they already don’t pay teachers jack crap!

Her doorter That purple weave She got a younger version of Angie shape Grown people that constantly cry about their working parents not being there irritate me. My mom worked 2 jobs sometimes for us to make it. I ain’t sitting up here grown like :wails: she don’t love me. I think maybe Angie might have been out there in them streets though and left her parents to raise her doorter so I think this situation could be different. Either way the doorter cannot expect to be famous or successful just because Angie is. I think she has a nice voice tho.

it annoys me how the “mamas” get the blame for everything. in any case, adults/teachers are held to a higher standard than kids. use your inside voice. hell, keep a flask in your desk like my friend does but dont be in there pitching a boogie and bringing yourself down to a child’s level.

The teacher went way too far but at least 30% of my family members are educators so I get the frustration level.

Years ago when my sister was teaching a 3rd grade ESL class in L.A. this baby thug told her he liked the way she moved in her skirt and she told him to have a seat and be quiet or he was going to the principal’s office. He cussed her OUT in spanglish.

She was in tears venting at my kitchen table when my husband walked by and decided he would instruct her on how to manage her classroom because he doesn’t have those type problems in his classroom (he’s a teacher and football coach).

ME:

MY SISTER: Nucca yo rusty azz is 6’4″ and 250 and you teach P.E.!! You NOT gon have these problems. (My sis is 5’0″)

It’s obviously that more than likely this child’s mother and the other students where in cahoots to intentionally provoked this teacher…Not to say that her behavior as the adult should be dismissed; however, these children are obviously very unruly especially by the loud nearly screams of the child that was filming…You can hear that she was reeling with delight that the teacher was caught…When the mother was told by her child that the teacher cursed at her, her first question should have been what did you do. Again, not excusing the teacher’s behavior, but people can only be pushed so far before they break.

I know everybody’s different and some folks are just plain o’ crazy, but I cannot imagine a person with an ounce of sense, and some mental functionality to just go off an curse a child for something simple. Some teachers in ATL may not be as apt as some others, and they may be a little more unprofessional, but it’s no telling what this lady has had to deal with on a daily basis…Most of us can point fingers and judge her, but without walking in her shoes we have no idea…People need to raise and train their children…Interesting the little girl only starts filming after whatever transpired that set the teacher off, or that’s the part the media is only showing…

What about students not listening, not following direction, being disrespectful. The reason why schools rate at the bottom is because students don’t have home training and respect for adults. she asked the young man to shut the door he continued to walk away. As an educator I completely can see where this is coming from. I have never (and hopefully) will never go off like this in my classroom but I can see how it happens. The students cuss us out and it’s literally no big deal at all. I was walking into school Monday morning and a student yelled at me and said “FUCK YOU!” a student I don’t even teach.

I thought to myself “Can I even get into the school before you guys start berating me!” It’s very frustrating the way the kids act and how their behaviors are completely tolerated. I was put on injured on duty leave for 4 days due to a rib fracture from being assaulted by a student this year as well.

I do have to say some of my students are amazing and I teach in an urban school. I get to know them on a personal level and foster positive relationships with the majority of them and I legitimately love them. Then I have some that are just outright defiant and rude. I can see being pushed to your breaking point but when you get there you need to just go home or something. I tell my students all the time I’m not risking my career over tomfoolery.
