In celebration of Black History Month, EBONY magazine published 4 different covers for its Black Music Month special collector’s edition featuring black glitterati Jay Z, Beyonce, Kanye West, and Rihanna. The covers are color-coded with sub headings that reflect the star’s public image. For instance, Rihanna’s cover says “Rebel”, while Beyonce is “The Diva”.
EBONY tapped political activist and noted author Kevin Powell to write the 4 mini features. Powell compared today’s stars with past legends including Tina Turner and Donna Summer.
“It was an honor to write the four cover stories for EBONY magazine’s Black Music Month special collector’s edition, and to also pen the additional four mini-features inside,” said the former MTV Real World: New York star. “Rarely do you see today’s unstoppable stars like Beyoncé, Rihanna, Kanye West and Jay Z packaged with legends like Tina Turner, Donna Summer or Tupac Shakur, but we did it because when it comes to Black music, it is important to note the deep connection between the musicians of yesterday and today,” he added.
Powell compared the irrepressible Kanye West (“The Poet”) to deceased lyricist Tupac Shakur.
“They are brothers from another planet – the one they built themselves,” said Powell. “Love them or hate them, there is no denying that these two bad boys of hip-hop make our culture so electric and so hard to ignore.”
EBONY magazine’s Black Music Month special collector’s edition is on newsstands now.
