Singer R. Kelly, 47, is having difficulty coming to terms with the news that his oldest daughter Jaya Kelly suffers from gender dysphoria, a mental disconnect between her biological sex and her chosen gender.
“Well, first off don’t start by calling her my son,” Kelly told WCGI’s The Morning Riot. ”As far as that’s concerned, always believe what you see—with your own eyes that is. That’s the best way to go about this business. I’ve heard a lot of things about a lot of people and it was never true.”
13-year-old Jaya, who goes by the name “Jay,” opened up about her condition during a question and answer session on Ask.fm. “I believe I am a boy and want surgery, and the medication to help me [be] who I was supposed to be,” she wrote.
The elder Kelly was not a constant presence in his daughter’s life even before divorcing Jay’s mother, reality TV personality Andrea Kelly, in 2009.
Kelly refused to address the controversy directly, saying, “Why do you think I’ve been here for 27 years and still relevant? Because I don’t address dumb sh*t. I don’t do it. I just don’t do it.”
