Comedian Chris Rock and his wife Malaak Compton-Rock are divorcing after 19 years of marriage. The couple has two daughters together.
Rock’s attorney, Robert S. Cohen, confirmed the couple’s split in a press release on Sunday.
“Chris Rock has filed for divorce from his wife, Malaak,” Cohen said. “This is a personal matter and Chris requests privacy as he and Malaak work through this process and focus on their family.”
You may recall there were whispers of Rock’s infidelities with numerous women — which Malaak was apparently aware of, but she stayed with him for the sake of their children.
“After much contemplation and 19 years of marriage, Chris and I have decided to go our separate ways,” Malaak Compton-Rock, 45, said in a statement Sunday. “Being fortunate enough to lead a life of service by working with those most vulnerable makes me well aware of life’s blessings, even when faced with difficulties.
She added: “While recognizing that this is a significant change, my children remain at the center of my life and their well-being is my top priority. It is in this spirit that I sincerely ask that their privacy and the privacy of our family be respected during this transition in our lives.”
The couple denied rumors that Rock fathered a child with a Caucasian woman in 2010.
As early as 2007 Rock was extolling the virtues of being a married man.
“The best part is just having a partner,” he said. “There is no real worst part. I’m not going to say there’s a worst part. I mean, I’m a comedian – comedians like to work alone. So maybe I’m not the ideal guy to be married to, in that sense.”

Although I hate to hear of the dissolution of any seemingly healthy marriage, I respect two people who are honest enough with both themselves and each other to know when to throw in the towel. You can’t breathe life into a corpse no matter how hard you try.
As opposed to the days of old, now women and men no longer have to stay together to save face. Now divorce is a more common practice. No longer do people have to stay in unhealthy situations. I’m all for ridding yourself of old skin, baggage, dead weight, and anything else that prohibits you from being the best you can be.
On certain levels, some people are meant to be in your life for only a season. They can still parent in separate but healthy environments, which I believe to be crucial during this time in their lives. May God bless them and best of luck to them.

I mean, I get we are all human beings, and we all have vices, but if you are in a monogamous relationship, don’t you have to CHOOSE everyday to be faithful? I’ve been blessed enough to know and spend time with my great-great, great and my grands. But she (this is my great GMA BTW) really took care of me as a kid. Kept me when I was sick. Picked me up from school in her rollers, came and ate lunch with me at school and was THE ONLY one in my family that didn’t make me feel bad about being pregnant so young.

I read a NY Times article a couple of weeks ago that states that divorce has been on the decline in the last 20 years. 70% of marriages that begin in the ’90s make it 15 years. Those married in the 2000s are divorcing at a lower rate than that. I wonder what will now be the extortion argument
