Nann to be honest with you, I live in California and we pay a tax to BREATH here, i.e., State, Local, Federal, City, County, Property, Car and there’s probably a few taxes I missed, so I don’t mine contributing to the Pope’s visit. Looks like he’s having a positive impact on people and to see so many young kids out there excited and into his visit is a good thing.

I had a friend who worked for the State in food service and he said they wasted so much food; throwing away good food like unsold sandwiches, deli meat, bread, cheese, salads that could’ve been eaten the next day, but because of ‘state regulations’ they weren’t allowed to keep it or give any to the homeless shelters, they had to throw it all out. I thought that was appalling and excessively wasteful.

Hey Hugga, I live in NorCal and believe it or not, there’s A LOT of affordable housing here (Stockton, Tracy, Patterson, Bakersfield, Fresno, Lodi, Sacramento) . The best paying jobs are in the Bay Area, specifically Silicon Valley and San Francisco and many times the affordable housing is 75 miles or more outside that perimeter. The wages in these locations aren’t in the stratosphere of what you would earn working in the Bay Area, so it would be a sacrifice to commute.
I know several people who make the commute everyday. Many times they leave home in the dark and return home in the dark. A lot of wear and tear on your vehicle, your body and GAS budget.
The name escapes me at the moment, but there’s a company in Silicon Valley whose looking to hire 15,000 people within the next 2 years. Many who work in SV & SF work there, but can’t afford to live there.

If your interested in living in the Silicon Valley area, a 1 bedroom rental, depending upon WHERE in Silicon Valley can run you anywhere from $1200 to $2500 a month. If you want to buy a home in Silicon Valley, plan on spending close to a million on the lower end.

Many will commute from the aforementioned AFFORDABLE areas to the Bay Area, BUT its a sacrifice. They leave home in the dark and return home in the dark, the wear and tear on your car, your gas budget, time with your family is sacrificed, but many do it in order to become home owners. In some of the affordable areas you can pay anywhere from $175K to $300K for a brand new home and that’s enticing for those who can’t afford anywhere close to a million dollar home.

The visit was in the works for years, even before the current Pope was in place. I think John Boehner invited two other pontiffs with no success This money was set aside for the visit long ago, probably was in an account collecting interest. Best believe the Vatican required top notch everything, before they even considered. My aunt went to the meeting here in Philadelphia and my cousin went to a mass, they both said his sermon was wonderful and the collection plate was not passed around, so he used this platform for good. Ruffled some feathers, with the Philadelphians, when he called the city an abomination, but he basically said what has already been said, I guess people didn’t like an outsider saying it…….well certain people, bothered me not one bit.

Not only did he eat and serve the homeless in Washington, he visited CFCF, a correctional facility here in Philadelphia and met with the inmates without a barrier.
