In the end, the larger message is that we should stop degrading Marie Holmes. She is caught up in a system that is abusing her. Kim’s income bracket wasn’t enough for her to lose a house to foreclosure last year. The amount owed on the house was reportedly $200k or $250k. The land for Chateau Sheree cost more than that.

When Kenya moved to Atlanta, she sold her home in L.A. for close to $1 million ($900k and change). She had that home for years. Even if she owed half of what she sold the house for, that was a nice takeaway.

I feel you. Real question…why don’t you look into your history? Why is saying “I’m American” good enough? In contrast, white Americans commonly reference their European ancestry but still are murican to the bone. Why are black people like raven symone content with knowing so little about themselves? Is it shame?

Because I don’t feel lost; I don’t feel like I’m lacking and I have a strong sense of self which I define based on my experiences, my culture, my morals, and my beliefs not by my blood or distant lineage. This does not constitute, however, as a disinterest in learning about Africa and the vast diversity of the African diaspora. I have visited some African countries, learned about their cultures, and their histories the same way I have enjoyed learning histories of other countries whose histories were lost to me thanks to the American school system. (in particular East Asia). White people are able to state that (and most other individuals here) because they immigrated here on their own terms. They know this because their history wasn’t raped from them. I am not motivated to dig around to learn about people for whom I have no tangible ties. If when I was growing up someone had stated, hey your great great grandparents were from Chad or Ethiopia, then yes I would have dug around then. But no one did because the white enslavers divvied up tribes when they brought us over, broke communities, and shoved random tribes together some of which did not speak the same language therefore severing ties to Africa. Then they made us a monolithic group of people by generalizing us all as African Americans. And in such, I don’t have any personal ties to Africa and it does not have any to me. Looking up stuff now would be akin to an anthropologist discovering an old civilization where you can appreciate it but from a distance which adds a touch of sterility there instead of emotion. So frankly, I am more interested in creating my own traditions versus adopting others.
