Karen Cvil Camron

Earlier this week, rap legend Cam’Ron took to social media to accuse blogger-turned-activist Karen Civil of being a liar and a thief.

In a series of social media posts, the rapper claimed Civil stole $60,000 and lied about an incident involving Cam’Ron and Roc Nation chief Jay Z.

The drama led many observers to wonder if the Civil/Cam’Ron beef was all an elaborate publicity stunt.

Civil, who is largely unknown outside of social media, capitalized off of the resulting publicity by giving “exclusive” interviews with media outlets such as Essence magazine.

Interestingly, Civil mentioned campaigning for presidential candidate Hillary Clinton who cut ties with her after BuzzFeed uncovered Civil’s homophobic and anti-Semitic tweets.

Below are excerpts from the Essence interview.

Essence: You’re all about bringing positive vibes to social media, yet right now you’re receiving a lot of negative backlash on Instagram. Let’s talk about it.

Karen Civil: Yeah. I’ve gotten to a point where this isn’t the first time it has happened to me. It’s all about how you use your social platform. Right now, I’m just using mine to empower people, get my entertainment and my news. Other people use their platform for different things. It’s unfortunate that cyberbullying is something that happens to 13-year-old kids in junior high and adults in the workplace. It’s something that we have to deal with as Americans. I am now a testament to it, and it’s happening to me. It’s definitely an unfortunate situation.

E: Do you ever read the negative comments? How do you personally handle them?
KC: I honestly haven’t had the time. I have a lot happening this week that I’m really excited about, especially with doing campaign trail stuff with Hillary [Clinton]. This is a really big and important week for me. I’ve been working on some future plans and things that I have planned for Haiti, and I’ve been meeting with my team about that for the last two days. It’s been a little hectic on my end, but I haven’t had the time to read them.
