Sports analysts and former pro players are weighing in on the D’Angelo Russell scandal.
The 20-year-old LA Lakers guard secretly recorded a private conversation with teammate Nick Young in a hotel room.
Young, unaware that he was being recorded, eagerly recounted his adventures with a 19-year-old groupie. Young is engaged to be married to wannabe rapper Iggy Azalea.
The video found its way onto a gossip blog, and from there it was picked up by ESPN and other sports outlets.
After the video went viral, Russell was shunned by his Lakers teammates and booed lustily by Lakers fans during Wednesday’s home loss against the Miami Heat.
Many former professional players are shocked that Russell broke the cardinal rule of the locker room and team hotel: what happens there, stays there.
“There are levels to the rules,” said SportsNation co-host Marcellus Wiley, who played in the NFL for 10 seasons. “The violations start at pillow talk, and that happens in every single locker room. Guys are talking amongst guys, and someone goes home and tells their significant other, and that turns to gossip, and someone else hears about it from the outside and it comes back into the locker room. That’s a misdemeanor, because it happens so often. But what D’Angelo did was felonious. This is the worst example I’ve ever seen. This is damning.” Source
The Lakers are investigating how the video was leaked from Russell’s phone.
