Google pulled it’s April Fool’s prank on Friday after it backfired causing workers to lose their jobs.
Google blamed a “bug” after Gmail users complained that they were fired for inserting a GIF into their emails of a minion dropping a microphone. A dropped mic usually signals the end of a skit or a rant. But some employers who received the “mic drop” GIF didn’t think it was funny.
Google apologized to Gmail users in a statement this morning:
“Well, it looks like we pranked ourselves this year. Due to a bug, the Mic Drop feature inadvertently caused more headaches than laughs. We’re truly sorry. The feature has been turned off. If you are still seeing it, please reload your Gmail page.”

Wait…so there are professional gmail accounts? Personally, I hate when people send emails with the designs in the background (e.g., notebook, rainbows, etc.); I think it’s unprofessional. So I’m not sure why someone would insert a cartoon gif into a work email anyway.

So was the gif inserted and THEN the user had the option to remove it and send the email? Or the gif was inserted and the email was immediately sent right afterwards? Because if it’s the former, then I’m sorry…pay attention to detail, double check if the email is formatted correctly and THEN hit send, especially if it’s a work email.

I remember this lady lost her job after 30 years at the company over an email she sent to the boss that was suppose to be a joke. They called her into the office at the end of the day she went in like ? and came out like ? She was so embarrassed she didn’t eem shut he computer down or take anything but her bag and jacket.
