Justin Bieber‘s latest cultural appropriation stunt backfired on social media last night.
Bieber, who won Male Artist of the Year last night at the 2016 iHeart Awards, sparked controversy by wearing his hair twisted in fake dreadlocks.
The 22-year-old superstar debuted his fake dreads on Instagram days before the awards show. But most of Black Twitter got its first look after Bieber’s fans tweeted pics from the awards show.
“[People say] why you wanna be black and all that stuff. I’m like ‘its just my hair,'” the singer told rapper Big Sean backstage at the awards show (see video below).
His fans were not as tolerant as Big Sean.
“wow bieber being dumb and racist is totally out of character for him! im so shocked!!” tweeted @enchiladad.
But not everyone was opposed to Bieber’s new style:
So saying that it's inappropriate for white people to have dreads isn't racist ?? So what if Justin Bieber has dreads.. Let him do him

Bieber also caught flack from Black Twitter for wearing his dirty blond hair in cornrows while vacationing with socialite Hailey Baldwin earlier this year.
What do you think? Is it just hair, or did Bieber’s latest stunt irk your nerves?
