Wendell Pierce

Actor Wendell Pierce spent Saturday morning cooling his heels in an Atlanta jail on a simple battery charge.

The portly 52-year-old actor is best known for his role as a Baltimore vice detective in HBO’s acclaimed crime drama series The Wire.

Gossip tabloid TMZ reports Pierce struck up a conversation with a Bernie Sanders supporter in the lobby of the Loews Hotel in Atlanta.

The conversation turned to politics; and Pierce, who is voting for Hillary Clinton, got heated. Pierce shoved the woman’s boyfriend aside and began striking the Bernie supporter and pulling her hair.

The couple escaped and called hotel security, who called police.

According to arrest records, Pierce, 52, was booked in Fulton County Jail on Saturday and released later that day on a $1,000 bond.

Further details about the arrest were not immediately known. A rep for Pierce did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
