A 24-year-old Texas middle school teacher who was charged with having a romantic affair with one of her students surrendered to police Wednesday. Alexandria Vera was charged with sexual abuse after she revealed she was pregnant with a 13-year-old student’s baby.
Vera paid $100,000 bond and was released Wednesday afternoon.
Vera was a teacher at Stovall Middle School in Houston, where she met the boy last summer. According to court documents obtained by the NY Post, Vera “fell in love” with the boy after she started working at the school last year — when he was 13.
The boy, who is now 14, sent Vera a private message on Instagram.com asking for her phone number, according to KPRC Houston.
Vera — who has a 4-year-old daughter, told investigators she drove out to the boy’s home the next day and had sex with him.
Their relationship continued over the school year, and other students observed them actively flirting with each other.
A neighbor told WFAA-ABC the boy visited Vera’s home frequently.
At an open house, Vera met the boy’s parents and introduced herself as his girlfriend. She told investigators the boy’s parents were “very supportive and excited” about her pregnancy. She said she aborted the baby after a child welfare investigator started asking questions.
School officials are in the process of terminating Vera’s employment.
