Yes, the album is introspective, soulful, ambitious… etc. But it isn’t anything we haven’t heard before.
If you like singers who sound like they’re struggling to do too much with too little, you will love Solange’s new album.
It wasn’t a disappointment, but the album doesn’t chart any new ground.
She sounds like Beyonce‘s little sister — and that’s not a compliment.
As usual, my people follow the crowds instead of listening with their own 2 ears.
The entire album gets a B for her husband Alan Ferguson‘s visuals, and Solange gets a C for effort.

LMAO @ you all falling for this fake deep, fake hipster bullshit. I skimmed through the album. It was just OKAY. Her collabs her horrible choices but the album was not that bad. It sounds like any of these other alternative hipster R&B albums. I will say she has a better voice than her screaming sister.
And the promo photos for the album is terrible. Solange looks like SIRlange in these photos. She needs to return the style she jacked to Janelle Monae, Kesha, and all the other hipster black girls she ripped off of.

It was a good break from the other more popular norms. How deep can you be when you haven’t struggled by force financially? Any deeper would not be believable. But it can sometimes come across as contrived as if she purposely wants to be different from her sister in reference to the genre.

Anyway Solange still got her shine…whether Bey and Jay release an album in Dec or not, her time is now. I’m personally not feeling the album like a lot of people are, but I guess its the right fit for the mood right now.
It failed to challenge my musical ear. The music was pleasant and quite predictable and worked for her small vocal range. Definitely nothing groundbreaking but good for her I guess. I love this style of music, but she needs to take it up a few notches.

I listened to it. Fell asleep at one point. Picked it up where I left off …didn’t find anything I wanted to hear again, but it was indeed a tolerable work of art. It reminds me of an album that wouldn’t have been tight enough to go gold back in the day, but strong enough to earn the artist recognition. Like, there are no real hits on this album. Nothing that moves me to hit that rewind button ..but I did let it play without skipping tracks, even if I was ready to, for the most part.

Because she is crazy and that’s how you handle crazy people. You try not to harm them or let them harm themselves , get them some Thorazine ( preferably an injection) and get them evaluated, a medicine adjustment or a psyche hold. Sometimes it takes all three. They probably have an on call doctor for her.
She has grown a lot as an artist. The idea is to evolve and move in new directions with art and sound. This album reflects the times and actually should be applauded for the boldness of the lyrical content. It’s pretty disruptive and innovative for R&B. Hope she gets Kaytranada, Goldlink or Anderson Paak for a remix of Don’t Touch My Hair. I think it’s FIRE

Maybe if you dwelve into the lyrics and not just lazily listen to it you’d understand the deep connection African Americans are feeling to this album. The 12-12-16 Billboard at MSG was for America’s Top Model. They copied Beyonce to get attention and it worked.

I do think that some people are just on the bandwagon and haven’t even fully listened to the album, but LOVE IT because they feel like they’re suppose to-for the culture..lol.

Love the album. Just what the world needs. Original, creative, and conscious music. Solange sounds like Solange and if you listen to what she’s saying she put her heart into it. The music is composed beautifully and even if she isn’t the strongest vocalist she lets us take a ride with her that is great for the black soul. It’s a healing experience. Mary J Blige, Nina Simone, and Keyshia Cole weren’t always everyone’s cup of tea but God gives all of us a voice and we have the right to express it any way we like. I happen to like the sound and the visuals are beautifully constructed.

she doesnt sound like “Beyonce’s little sister”. They both have soulful voices but sound n have completely different styles. Her music isnt pop…It isnt for the popular or mainstream ears. Its for people who enjoy this genre of music,jazzy sounds, easy listening, and the message being displayed.
Her sound is okay…but every damn song sounds the same…n what the fluck is Lil Wayne doin on that collab??? He sounds like a cheap azz Young Thug…Its alternative R&B soul….why would she have him on the song….it sounds like two different songs when he comes on…I can’t… I like how her sound is mature and soulful..but there is literally no excitement in any of the tunes…
I finally got a chance to listen to Solange’s whole new album, and I was totally impressed! Yes, she took a whole lot of identifiable influences from Amel Larrieux, Badu, Tweet, Janelle Monae, Minnie Riperton, Denise Williams, The Emotions, En Vogue, smooth jazz artists, you name them! As Aiko Jhene, Andra Day, Alicia Keys, Janelle Monae also did! She meticulously gathered (over a long period of time) her ingredients and select cuts, seasoned, brine, marinated, harvested and gave birth to a beautiful piece of work! Some will think it’s not a big deal, but for black music it is [what is out there, really]! She didn’t pander to radio, didn’t try to make music to chart [definitely not], but people are loving it’s laid-back tone, in an age where many people can’t stand slower tempo music, but she keeps it jumping quietly with backstory music and interludes that don’t disrupt the flow of the music!
Cranes in the Sky is what so many go through or find relatable, and other joints that makes this CD relevant track for track! I’m not into the black movement aspect of this project, but for those who are, great! Real empowerment is self-empowerment (education, volunteerism, not trashing your own hood or people, and financial boycotts (the money always talks). I believe this CD brings something potent for a variety of listeners, not everyone, of course! She found her inner (soul-sound) and studio voice, mission statements, and a paved lane beyond all her other past musical efforts! Congratulations!!!
There is a market for her music, I’m not part of that market but I wish success with this album.

Wow, don’t touch my hair was an amazing song and a powerful statement. I love her voice…in comparison to beyonce and her howling and belting solange’s voice is like a smooth silky glass of chocolate milk. And I love cranes in the sky. Anyhow….solange is a way better, creative, actually talented artist that I can take way more seriously than beyonce.

I don’t see what all the hype is about Solange album! It is not the worst thing I have heard but, certainly not worth all this hoopla that it’s causing! One thing I know that solange can’t do is dance in her videos it a obvious to everyone that she can’t dance at all! The facial expressions in her videos are not very alluring either but, I must give her props with the fact that her voice is a lot nicer than her sister Beyonce whose voice is in my opinion one note, sounds the same in every song she sings!

It was so great that I purchased it. Can u dig it. Today music is free but I purchased this album. I only purchase great albums. Solo is underrated .
Beyonce fans may think that. Music connoisseurs are more likely to rate Solange way beyond her sister, there is more lyrical substance and a lot more going on musically with Solange. The reason the popular vote goes to Beyonce is more to do with her physical assets than her musical ones
I love the message in Solange’s music. I just wish the message was delivered with better vocals.
Solange’s A Seat at the Table gets a “C” on the strength of the lyrical content. Those thin, wispy vocals are the problem. She simply doesn’t have the chops to be great.
