James Packer regrets putting a ring on it. The Australian millionaire who was once engaged to American pop singer Mariah Carey says he was “at a low point” in his life when he met the divorcedmother-of-2 in 2016.
After a whirlwind 3 month courtship Carey asked Packer to propose to her. He happily complied.
“She was kind, exciting and fun,” Packer, 50, told the Australian (via The Daily Mail). “Mariah is a woman of substance. She is very bright. But it was a mistake for her and a mistake for me.”
Packer said he was stressed over negotiations with his estranged sister Gretel about how to divide and invest money left to them by their late father Kerry.
“I was at a low point in my personal life,” he continued. “Documenting the negotiations with my sister was taking longer than expected.”
Packer broke up with Carey after 18 months of dating. The divorced father-of-2 began to have second thoughts when the 47-year-old singer started spending his money like water.
First there was the over-the-top $10 million engagement ring, then there was the reality TV show that Packer didn’t want any part of.
Finally, during the prenuptial negotiations, Packer realized he didn’t want to marry Carey. After the breakup, she sued him for $50 million, claiming emotional distress. Carey is now dating her 34-year-old backup dancer Bryan Tanaka.
