Bullying in high schools

Florida’s legislature is giving hope (literally) to parents of students who are bullied relentlessly in public schools. Florida lawmakers plan to use Hope Scholarships to pay for private school vouchers for vulnerable students to attend private schools. The scholarships will be paid for by redirecting $105 from car registration fees.

But the state teacher’s union opposes the measure because they say it will weaken public schools by allowing 1,000 students to immediately withdraw and enroll in private schools.

via Daily Mail UK — The Hope Scholarships would be the first such program nationally and funded through car buyers voluntarily redirecting $105 from their registration fee to the program.

Supporters believe that would fund 1,000 vouchers. Religious and secular private schools could participate.

The state teachers union opposes the measure as an effort to weaken public schools and it and some parents say the measure does nothing to stop bullying.

Some parents are concerned that the school vouchers will be distributed disproportionately to non-minority students.
