Solange Knowles’ new album When I Get Home dropped like a sack of wet sand last night. Beyonce’s little sister surprised her fans by teasing her new album on Black Planet this week.
Solange’s tweet, “Find me on Black Planet,” left many of her older fans struggling to remember our logins.
Solange promised to deliver her new album at midnight. It was worth losing sleep to listen to 19 new tracks from the musician who gave us the masterful A Seat At the Table, which landed at #1 on the Billboard chart and earned Solo her first Grammy in 2016.
Unfortunately, WIGH failed to impress Solo’s fans who were expecting a lot more than music as artful noise.
The set features rappers Playboi Carti, Earl Sweatshirt, Tyler the Creator, Gucci Mane, and more – but not much of a contribution from the singer herself.
“I’m on song 10 and she has yet to sing,” wrote one disappointed fan. “…like I get she is into a “contextualized high-art” form of singing but give me lyrical content that isn’t a repetitive melody and singing that’s flows with emotion and less tracks that are overpowered by monotone adult swim vibes.”

It is straight trash. I think she made it while high on acid. Idk wtf she’s talking about. The vocals are weak as expected but it was tolerated in her last album bc the lyrics spoke to me. It is an album full of ad libs. I am so disappointed bc “A Seat at the Table” got me through 2018.

Solange’s problem is that she WANTS to be deep real real bad and it never comes across as authentic, to me. She has tried EVERY single genre of music and this “earthy” schtick is the only one that’s stuck and gave her a semblance of success… but she’s taking THAT to the extreme.
When she first came out, she was trying an R&B infused hip hop… Nobody was cutting for it. Then she tried pop… nobody was cutting for it… then the Amy Winehouse’s and Duffy’s were doing their thing with that 60’s sound and she tried that… dust.
She went with this earth child thing after her wedding and people started to connect a little after those bomb wedding pictures and then she was suddenly a deep, incense lighting, afro wearing, “I don’t give a fuk-er” and people were like, “OK… let’s give her a chance.”
Now this. I still haven’t been motivated to buy an album, but I’ve bought a single. I think she should do some music that people might actually LISTEN to. I don’t see myself riding in the car to this, or putting it on when my friends come by (as IF them mfs gettin’ in my house), or playing it at the club. This is the kind of music you play when you’re depressed and thinking about ending it all. Music to usher you into the next phase hymnals. Aaaah… I’m cool.

I love Solo and find her vibes and inspirations to be authentic. I don’t believe she’s trying to be deep, but has the luxury of getting to create at her leisure and be authentic to herself/her art and doesn’t spoon feed a message in the name of the lowest common denominators understanding.
Like… a Capricorn type of person can vibe to some Solange or similar as background music after a long day of conquering their profession, but doesn’t even use the parts of the brain an artist does so the art is not made for them to actually feel. When you’re the sister of the biggest singer in the country and you’re also a singer, you’re going to get compared if you do hair and she sings. So, my thing is – do some good MUSIC to stop the comparisons.
Beyoncé has enough connections to ask some good producers to help her sister with some songs and she’ll do a song with them in the future as payback. That’s how her father got Solange the little bit of name she has. He used Beyoncé as leverage to kick down doors for Solange.
Janet was able to do it. She was the sister of the biggest star on EARTH and ended up being the SECOND biggest star at one point. If Beyoncé is #1, Solange can EASILY get to #217 if she put in the work.

The sound is not knew, ERYKAH BADU and Amel Larrieux does it, or even Q-Tip (A Tribe Name Quest), Miles Davis jazzz fusion era!

No one can pigeonhole an Artist to anything! An Artist has free will to make the music one chooses. No one is holding a gun to their heads. They are plenty of Black Artists that make a variety of music in different genres. You have to actually put in the work of seeking these artists out. To say Black Artists are pigeonholed to only hip hop and R&B is ridiculous in 2019.
I agree, there are MANY, but they don’t receive promotion, EXPOSURE, and visibility! I hear more diversity of artists on SiriusXM!
I used to write for an entertainment newspaper, blog, and saw so many talented artists, press-kits, listening parties, music showcases, etc., heartbreaking!
But, what or who becomes musical superstars or able to reach the masses is a very narrow collection, IMO!
I worked with high school students in after school programs or the projects, we would take the kids to listen to jazz and world music artists, and they loved it. I would play music, while we worked on projects, and the kids always wanted to know “who is that?”
Music is a universal language, and has healing and soothing effects or the opposite! Radio is corporate with a redundant playlist, and doesn’t choose to break new black artists!
Artists of ALL races and ethnicities have a hard time breaking through not just Black Artists. Who becomes a global superstar is narrow regardless of the race of the Artist. Artists have to come up with ways to promote and sell themselves.
Relying on the record company to do everything and the blame game and using the race card is lame.
Its 2019 Black people have ALWAYS listened and made all genres of music. The notion Black Artists are forced to do certain types of music is lame.
Well, I certainly get what you’re saying, and making it without high-powered machine promotion and publicity isn’t impossible, and good luck to anyone who tries!
I know working musicians and singers who earn a good living performing for clubs, private gigs, festivals, on cruise ships, and travel around the globe. They build a fan base and make albums, and sell their music at performances and online, at a tremendous profit, as independent artists!
Then you have YouTube Channels and Social Media that can possibly catapult an artist into superstardom or create a lucrative revenue stream by monetizing!
Also, having a good publicist can build an artist brand locally, nationally, and internationally!
But, many or SOME artists want to be signed by a major record label, then try to make music that is radio-friendly, reach a certain demo, go for making “hits,” often discouraged from doing the music they would really like to do! It’s a choice, NOT mandatory!
We do have Beyoncé, Rihanna, Alicia Keys, Nicki Minaj, Jill Scott, Erykah, Marsha, India Ari, Janelle, Solange, SZA, H.E.R., Sevyn, Ella Mai, and some others!
