A Georgia woman is behind bars after police say she went on social media and claimed she infected unsuspecting men with the HIV virus. Police arrested Brandi Yakeima Lasiter, who bragged that she infected a plethora of men with the HIV virus.
Americus police Major Herman Lamar said they received tips about the video from Facebook users on Friday. The 1-minute video shows Lasiter naming the men she allegedly infected, along with their wives and girlfriends.
Lamar says one of the men named in the video filed a harassment complaint against Lasiter. The investigation is ongoing and Lamar says police will determine what charges Lasiter faces after they first prove she is infected with HIV.
Knowingly transmitting the virus that causes AIDS is a felony in Georgia, although California has reduced the penalty to a misdemeanor to reduce stigma associated with the virus.
Numerous unbiased studies have shown female-to-male HIV transmission is rare. Men who have sex with men are still at highest risk by having anal sex without protection.
The risk of transmission is decreased considerably when taking medication to prevent HIV.
