Defending U.S. Open champion Naomi Osaka of Japan consoled a crying Cori “Coco” Gauff of the United States after she defeated the teen phenom in the Women’s Singles round 3 match at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Day 6 of the U.S. Open tennis tournament in Flushing, Queens, New York City on Sunday.
Osaka dropped just three games on her way to an easy 6-3, 6-0 win over the Florida teenager.
After embracing at the net Osaka consoled the sobbing 15-year-old near the umpire’s chair. Osaka, 21, asked Gauff to remain on the court for the on court interview.
“She did amazing and I’m going to learn a lot from this match,” Gauff said. “She’s been so sweet to me, so thank you for this.
“Once again, thank you, Naomi. I don’t want people to think that I’m trying to take this moment away from her. She really deserves it, so thank you.”
Gauff became the youngest woman to win two matches at the U.S. Open since 1996.
Osaka also fought back tears as she reminisced about playing on the junior tennis tour.
“I don’t want to cry,” Osaka said. “I remember I used to see you guys training in the same place as us. For me, the fact that both of us made it, and we’re both still working as hard as we can, I think it’s incredible. I think you guys are amazing. I think Coco, you’re amazing.”
The showdown between Osaka and Gauff topped the tennis rankings on ESPN2.
Awwwe sweet
I just love these two. The next generation of tennis superstars will not disappoint ??
Facepalm ing…
You win some and you loose some.. BUT YOU LIVE TO PLAY ANOTHER GAME!
This was gracious and huge hearted of Naomi. Beyond good sportsmanship. ?
I’m curious to know who designed/dressed Coco. Coco’s young and cute. Unfortunately women in tennis are harshly judged by how they look before they are even appreciated for how well they play. Serena can attest to that. Congratulations to both young ladies.
That’s life.
What a beautiful moment between the two of them….Coco is adorable…she still looks like a young Venus
Exactly!
Looking for this sister to do big things!!!
She’ll bounce back. She’s only 15. She has a lot of successful years ahead of her.
2019 U.S. Open: Naomi Osaka Loses in the Fourth Round
Belinda Bencic beat Osaka, the No. 1 seed and defending champion, for the third time this year.
?????
Awe Naomi… I like her. She & CoCo are a breath of fresh air.
Well, Black Girls are showing up and showing out in women’s tennis, esp. representing the U.S.! Taylor Townsend, Madison Keys, Sloane Stephens, Venus, Serena, Coco and Naomi (Japan)!
It’s amazing, I’m glad to see them winning at this sport, and many others will follow! As [legends/trailblazers] Venus and Serena’s careers come full-circle, and they leave the game, Coco and others will carry the mantle!
WP are stuck with us because we out play other US women’s tennis players, and they want to see that US flag on the score board! But, even these women can’t dispel Black Women stereotypes nor does this make them “Americans,” in the minds many “white Americans!”
Black Girls Rock!
So true! Unfortunately, it’s more of a story when these black tennis superstars lose! It’s not that big of a story when white top seed lose.
There can only be one winner, and we’re expected to win non-stop, every grand slam we make past the first rounds!
No one, or any top seed is unbeatable! Osaka beat Serena, which pleased many of her haters, but no one, not even Serena at her best, wins every match!
Osaka will continue to win some and lose some like any other player!
Coco will win multiple GS titles.
She has many more to come, the first is always the that hurts the most.
Osaka dress is so cute. That was really a nice thing to do because Coco is so young and now under a lot of pressure.
