Toy maker Mattel, Inc. is doing its part to help minor children choose their own genders with a new line of gender-nonconforming dolls.
The Creatable World gender nonconforming dolls are available with short hair and a kit containing long wigs and a variety of gender neutral clothing options.
Children can create over 100 different genders with the dolls.
“Toys are a reflection of culture and as the world continues to celebrate the positive impact of inclusivity, we felt it was time to create a doll line free of labels,” said Kim Culmone, senior vice president of Mattel Fashion Doll Design.
Mattel worked with parents, doctors and other child experts to create the new line of dolls that will help children rethink the former boy, girl gender standard.
The dolls were tested on 250 families, including 15 children who identify as transgender, gender binary, gender nonconforming, etc.
The new toy line is part of Mattel’s push to eliminate the boy, girl stereotypes in today’s culture.
“Through research, we heard that kids don’t want their toys dictated by gender norms,” Culmone said. “This line allows all kids to express themselves freely, which is why it resonates so strongly with them.”
The new dolls are available now in stores.
