Bryshere Y. Gray was arrested Monday at his Arizona home after a domestic dispute with his wife escalated to violence.
Gray was charged with assault after he strangled his wife until she lost consciousness.
The 26-year-old actor was taken into custody hours after he barricaded himself inside his home on Sunday night.
The incident happened around 10:15 p.m. Sunday when Goodyear police responded to a 911 call from a woman at a Circle K gas station.
The woman told police her husband, the actor Bryshere Y. Gray, had assaulted her for hours and choked her until she passed out at their Goodyear home.
The woman reportedly had “numerous visible injuries” on her body, according to PEOPLE. She was taken to a nearby hospital where she received treatment for her injuries and was discharged.
Police responded to the Gray residence located at the 13000 block of S. 176th Lane, and attempted to speak with Gray, but he refused to come outside.
Police called out the Goodyear SWAT team and Crisis Negotiations to assist them. The standoff ended just after 7 a.m. Monday, when Gray was taken into custody without incident.
He was booked into the Maricopa County Jail on domestic assault and disorderly conduct charges. His mugshot was posted on the Goodyear police Facebook page.
Gray, pictured with Empire castmate Jussie Smollett, began his career as a rapper at age 16. Using the stage name Yazz The Greatest, he performed at music festivals in the Philadelphia area, including Jay Z’s Made in America Festival.
He got his big break when he was cast to play Hakeem Lyon on Fox TV’s Empire in 2015. The series was canceled earlier this year after six seasons.
