Dallas’ former police chief says a killer cop was kept on the police force for over a year so he wouldn’t be tipped off that he was under investigation for a double murder.
Former Officer Bryan Riser was arrested Thursday and booked into the Dallas County Jail where he is being held on $5 million bail.
Riser is accused of ordering the kidnapping and murders of two people, 31-year-old Liza Saenz and Albert Douglas, 61, in separate incidents in 2017.
Former Police Chief U. Renee Hall, who resigned from the department in 2020, explained why Riser continued patrolling for more than a year.
“Doing anything different, we may not have been able to bring justice to the families,” she said.
Dallas’ new police chief, Eddie Garcia, said an informant came forward with a tip that Riser ordered the killings.
Garcia said investigators are still trying to determine the motives.
Three men are charged with the murders. They are currently serving life in prison.
The affidavit, obtained by ABC News, states that Riser told one of the killers that Saenz was a police informant.
