Mariah Carey departed Jay Z‘s Roc Nation management because she was looking to downsize to a smaller boutique management firm, TMZ reports.

According to earlier reports, Mariah left Roc Nation after an “explosive” argument with Jay Z during a meeting about her future with the company.

However, Mariah took to Instagram on Monday to deny reports that she had an explosive argument with her former boss.

Sources close to the situation tell TMZ that Mariah prefers to work with a smaller team that can devote more time to her. Unfortunately, Jay’s powerhouse agency has too many cooks in the kitchen.

At Roc Nation, artists like Mariah could have 20 or more people working on marketing, social media, music, merchandise, etc. — which created an impersonal environment and she simply wanted a more intimate team.

TMZ’s sources say Mariah and Jay Z actually decided a couple months ago to part ways amicably after working together since 2017.

Mariah reportedly signed with Range Media Partners, which also signed her manager Melissa Ruderman. Ruderman left Roc in early 2021 to become a partner in the music division at Range, and she will be working closely with Mariah.

The report prompted speculation that Ruderman lured Mariah away from Roc Nation to join her at Range.

Some of Range’s other clients include big name actors Bradley Cooper, Jonny Depp, Michael Fassbender, Tom Hardy and Keira Knightley.

Mariah will be Range’s first bold name music artist.
