The ACLU, which represents families in one of the lawsuits, estimates up to 5,000 families were separated at the border under the Trump administration.

The agencies are considering paying $450,000 to each person who crossed the border illegally and was separated from their child.

About 940 claims have been filed so far, per the ACLU. That number is expected to rise.

The lawsuits seek varying payouts, with the average being roughly $3.4 million per family.

The total potential payout could be $2 billion or more.
