Regina King is mourning the loss of her son Ian Alexander, Jr. who died by suicide just a few days after his 26th birthday on Wednesday, Jan. 19.
Gossip blogger Love B. Scott was first to report the sad news on Friday. In an exclusive statement to lovebscott.com, Regina writes:
“Our family is devastated at the deepest level by the loss of Ian. He is such a bright light who cared so deeply about the happiness of others. Our family asks for respectful consideration during this private time. Thank you.”
Ian, who worked as a DJ, is the actress’s son by her ex-husband, record producer Ian Alexander. The couple divorced in 2007.
Following her divorce, the Oscar winner gave up dating men and devoted herself to raising Ian as a single mother.
Ian proudly escorted his mother when she won her 4th Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in Watchmen in 2020.
He posted a tribute to his mother on Instagram on her 50th birthday on January 15, 2021:
“…To have you as my mother is the greatest gift I could ask for. To be all that you are while always having the time to be there, love and support me unconditionally is truly remarkable. The whole marvel universe ain’t got shit on you, your the real superhero! Love you mom! This day and everyday YO DAY!!”
According to PEOPLE, mother and son were so close they had matching tattoos with the words “unconditional love” written in Aramaic.
