A Georgia woman has been charged in the death of a Gwinnett teenager who was run over in an apartment complex parking lot.
The Snellville woman, who was not identified, is charged with second degree homicide by vehicle in the death of 16-year-old Camaya Harris.
According to WXIA-11, Camaya was heading to the bus stop on her first day of JROTC at 5:45 a.m. when she was hit and run over by the woman who was pulling into a parking space at Park West Apartments on Jan. 20.
Police received a 911 call from a Gwinnett County bus driver who said her wife ran over the teenager in the 2100 block of Kings Gate Circle.
The bus driver said she was driving behind her wife’s car in the parking lot of the apartment complex and witnessed the accident.
According to a police report, obtained by WXIA-11, police spoke to the car’s driver who told police she was dropping off her dogs at a sitter’s home when she pulled into a parking spot and “felt a ‘bump’ but did not see the pedestrian,” the report reads.
The woman said her wife — the bus driver — rushed to the car screaming to not move the car, according to the report. The bus driver testified to police that she saw her wife strike the teen and told her that the girl was trapped under the car’s wheels, according to the report.
Camaya, a South Gwinnett High School student, was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders.
Family and friends remembered Camaya as a “fun loving young lady” who loved music and TikTok.
Her family said Camaya worked at a KFC restaurant with her father, and she had just applied for her driver’s permit the night before she died.
