Dwyane Wade filed a petition to permanently change Zion Wade‘s name to Zaya Wade and gender to female.
According to legal documents, obtained by The Blast, Wade petitioned a Los Angeles County court to change his 15-year-old child’s name from Zion Malachi Airamis Wade to Zaya Malachi Airamis Wade.
He also asked the court to legally issue a decree recognizing that the minor’s gender is changed to “female” to “conform with gender identity.”
Wade filed the paperwork because Zaya is under 18 years old.
Zaya has been openly transgender since age 12 — at the encouragement of the ex-NBA star and his wife, actress Gabrielle Union.
In the documents, Wade said he has full authority to make the decision – and he does not require permission from Zaya’s biological mother, Siohvaughn Funches, but Wade did notify Funches of the petition.
“Pursuant to the terms of the Final Custody Judgment, (Wade) has full authority to make decisions on behalf of the petitioning minor, and he is not required to receive consent from Ms. Funches-Wade. As a courtesy, Ms. Funches-Wade has received notice of this petition,” according to the document.
