A debate is raging on Black Twitter about Lupita Nyong’o’s new boyfriend, Selema “Sal” Masekela. Lupita’s loyal fans called out Twitter users who say Sal is too “ugly” for the Oscar winner.
Lupita and Sal made their relationship Instagram official in a cute video in December.
According to Yahoo! Entertainment, Sal is the son of South African jazz artist Hugh Masekela.
Sal reportedly works as a sports commentator and TV host who covered the Olympic Games and NBA games in the early 2000s.
Instagram’s reaction to the video was very positive. But Black Twitter users were not impressed.
One Black Twitter user wrote: “Lupita Nyonga is so beautiful & she’s dating the ugliest BM I’ve ever seen.”
Another Twitter user wrote: “I learned it’s okay to call certain people ugly unprovoked cause the same people calling Lupita’s boyfriend (who ain’t did sh-t to y’all) ugly would have a fit if the shoe was on the other foot.”
Other Lupita fans were upset over the blatant disrespect.
One person tweeted: “B-tches calling Lupita man ugly but be getting damp to Matt Smith and Cumberbatch. Interracial dating has ruined my people.”
While another person tweeted: “I would think that calling Lupita’s man ugly is equivalent to insulting the woman herself. You’re basically saying Lupita has poor taste in men… which is not being pro-BW btw.”
Still, others are upset that Sal is not on the same level as one of the most beautiful women in the world.
