Will Smith‘s slavery film Emancipation is among the 2023 Golden Globes snubs according to reports.
When the Golden Globes nominations were announced on Monday, Dec. 12, many expected Antoine Fuqua‘s film to be among the nominees for Best Motion Picture.
Moviegoers were impressed with Smith’s emotional portrayal of a slave named Gordon who was the subject of a 19th century photo titled “Whipped Peter.”
But Smith is struggling to revive his career after the infamous Oscars slap earlier this year. Emancipation is Smith’s first role since winning his first Academy Award for King Richard.
In a recent interview, Smith claimed a white co-star spit in his face while filming a tense scene in Emancipation.
“It was emotionally, it was physically, it was spiritually taxing,” said Smith, describing the scene.
“One of the first days on set, there is a scene with one of the actors and he leans down in my face and says, ‘You a cold one, ain’t you?’ and then he ad-libbed,” said Smith, before mimicking spitting on his daughter Willow. He then acted out his shocked reaction.
“I was like, ‘Makeup!’ No, but it was like… I was like, whoa, every actor on this set was taking it really, really seriously,” he said.
Smith didn’t disclose the name of the actor who spit on him.
