Former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms announced she is quitting as a senior official in the Biden administration.
Bottoms made the announcement after President Biden made inappropriate remarks during a Black History Month celebration at the White House on Monday.
Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and others gathered in the East Room for a reception on Monday, as Black History Month draws to a close.
Biden told the audience, “I may be a white boy, but I’m not stupid. I know where the power is. You think I’m joking?”
Hours later, Bottoms announced she was leaving her role as Public Engagement Advisor to the president, a position she has held since June 2022.
In a tweet, Bottoms made it clear that she never planned to remain in a permanent role within the administration.
She wrote:
“@WhiteHouse called again in June and I said, “I’ll stay just thru midterms in November.” Months later this extraordinary season soon ends. Thanks family and @POTUS.”
Bottoms said she plans to run for public office again when she returns to Georgia.
“It’s time for me to get back,” she said.
