Felton Spencer, a Louisville legend and 1st round NBA draft pick, passed away on Sunday, March 12. He was 55.

His sister Tammy Pollock announced his passing on Twitter.com Monday.

Pollock didn’t reveal Spencer’s cause of death, but she said he died at the University of Louisville Hospital.

“It was befitting that he received excellent care in his final hours from the providers at the University of Louisville Hospital, his Alma mater that he loved so dearly,” she tweeted.

“Our family thanks them and everyone who participated in his care. We are proud of all he did on the court and in his personal life. He was a kind, gentle giant whose physical presence will be sorely missed. While we are heartbroken, we are comforted by your thoughts and prayers.”

Spencer, who finished his NBA career with the NY Knicks, set single-season and career records at Louisville before playing 12 years in the NBA.

The 7-foot center was a member of the Utah Jazz teams that made it to the Western Conference Finals in 1994 and 1996.
