Tory Lanez’s sentencing hearing has been pushed back again. The Canadian rapper was expected to be sentenced today, April 10, following his conviction in December for shooting Grammy-winning rapper Megan Thee Stallion in both feet.
A jury convicted him of assault with a semiautomatic firearm, discharging a firearm with gross negligence and carrying a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle.
However, his sentencing hearing has been pushed back twice since January, as his defense attorneys appeal the conviction.
Megan Thee Stallion has recovered from her injuries and her career has soared to new heights. But her emotional wounds are still fresh.
Meanwhile, another court date is scheduled for next week, Deputy District Attorney Alexander Bott said, according to NBC News.
Tory faces a maximum sentence of 22 years and eight months in prison if the judge gives him the maximum sentence on each charge.
He could also be deported back to Canada after he serves his sentence in the US.
The prosecutor’s office filed a response to the request for a new trial on Thursday. The prosecutor said the motion lacked substance and the guilty verdict should stand.
“The evidence presented at trial was properly admitted, and the defendant’s claims of errors and violations of his constitutional rights are without merit,” the prosecution’s filing said. “The verdict reached by the jury was based on credible evidence and was supported by the law.”
Tory remains in jail without bond while he awaits the judge’s decision on his motion for a new trial.
